ZEBULON, N.C. - The Jacksonville Suns (16-19, 53-52) fell 4-2 to the Carolina Mudcats (15-20, 38-67) on Saturday night at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
The Suns dropped the final two games of the six games series, but still took a series victory by winning the first four games. Carolina starter Kyle McCulloch (5-5) earned the win by tossing seven innings where he only allowed two runs on three hits.
Carolina took the game's first lead in the bottom of the first when Quintin Berry scored from third on a balk by Jacksonville starter Dallas Trahern. Jacksonville responded in the top of the second, with Jeremy Synan hitting a two-RBI triple that put the Suns up 2-1.
Trahern, transitioning back into the starting rotation from the bullpen, threw three innings allowing a lone run on three hits. Jeff Allison (3-3) took over in relief in the fourth, where the Mudcats would get the lead back. Bill Rhinehart hit a two-run homer that gave Carolina a 3-2 lead. Berry would add an RBI single to cap the three-run fourth at 4-2.
Despite taking the loss, Allison threw three scoreless innings following the fourth, with the sixth and seventh in perfect fashion. Tim Gustafson pitched the final inning and a third for Carolina blanking the Suns, earning his second save of the season.
Synan and Ben Lasater were the only two Suns with multi-hit games, as Jacksonville only collected six hits in the loss.
The Suns will bus home to Jacksonville and start a ten-game homestand that begins with a five-game series against the Montgomery Biscuits. The first game of the series on Sunday night will feature "Dog Days of Summer," with fans allowed to bring their dogs to the ballpark for $2.50, and all kids will receive a Southpaw Color-Me Magnet.
Right-handed pitcher Joey O'Gara (6-6, 4.43 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville against Montgomery's right-hander Jim Paduch (1-4, 5.15 ERA). Sunday's game will start at 6:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 5:35 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
