Hoover, AL - Hainley Statia homered and drove in four runs as the Huntsville Stars (16-19, 53-52) melted the Birmingham Barons (15-20, 55-50), 7-1, in front of 5,118 fans Saturday night at Regions Park.
Huntsville hung two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning when Lee Haydel drew a leadoff walk and Statia followed with his second home run of the season over the left-center field wall, 2-0.
The Stars doubled their lead in the second inning when Brock Kjeldgaard singled, Khris Davis reached on an error and Anderson de la Rosa singled that loaded the bases. Statia's single up the middle brought home Kjeldgaard and Davis as the Stars claimed a four-run edge, 4-0.
Huntsville tacked on three runs in the fifth inning when Haydel walked, stole second base and raced home of Steffan Wilson's double down the left field line. After Wilson stole third base and Zealous Wheeler walked, Kjeldgaard smashed a double to right field that plated both runners, 7-0.
Birmingham scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ross Wilson walked, bumped to second base on a walk to Luis Sierra and dashed to third base when Greg Paiml grounded into a double play. Alden Carrithers singled to left field that drove home Wilson for the Barons only run, 7-1.
Huntsville starter Cody Scarpetta (7-5) earned the victory after he tossed 6.0 IP with one earned run on 3 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Justin Edwards (3-5) suffered the defeat for the Barons after he surrendered seven earned runs with 7 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
