Hagerstown Suns News Release

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Gilbert Lara finished the night 2-3, punctuating the evening with a homer in the top of the ninth with two outs, but the outing could not push the Suns over the Asheville Tourists in a 7-5 loss at McCormick Field Wednesday night.

Lara's home run merely cut the Tourists (10-15) lead to two. The shortstop doubled in the fifth to push his hitting-streak to 16-games.That stretch is tied with Jarred Kelenic of the West Virginia Power for the longest-active hitting streak in all of Minor League Baseball. Over that stretch, Lara is 26-for-68 (.382) and has added three homers and 15 RBI and seven doubles.

It was a back-and-forth affair between the Tourists and Suns (10-16). The Suns jumped out in the first after Cody Wilson led-off the first with a double over center fielder Grant Lavigne's head. He scored off the bat of Lara, as the shortstop grounded out to allow Wilson to advance home.

Luke Morgan opened up scoring for the home team, he doubled in the bottom of the first to score Terrin Vavra and came around on an error from Lara.

The Suns hopped back in the lead in the second. Nic Perkins banged a triple off the right field wall to score Justin Connell and Pablo O'Connor.

The lead would not hold however, as Vavra struck again, this time bouncing a single to right to score Coco Montes. That score tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the second.

Wilson plated O'Connor in the fourth off a deflected ball to third to push the Suns in front again, 4-3 in the fourth.

The Tourists jumped ahead off a Lavigne single in the fourth to make the score 5-4 before Will Golsan put the game out of reach with a two-out two RBI double in the seventh that scored Montes and Cade Harris.

Tomas Alastre struggled in the start, making it just 3.1 innings pitched, while allowing four runs to cross home and walking a handful of batters.

After Alastre, Jackson Stoeckinger (L, 1-1) spun 1.2 innings while allowing the game-winning run to score before giving way to Ryan Williamson. Williamson worked three innings, allowing two runs in his Suns debut.

The three-game series between these two teams concludes tomorrow at McCormick Field at 7:05 p.m. RHP Joan Adon (1-1, 4.50 ERA) gets the nod for Hagerstown, while Asheville sends LHP Nick Bush (1-2, 7.56 ERA) to toe the rubber. This will be the final game the two teams play in 2019.
