Suns Drop Final Two Games to BayBears 6-5, 3-0

MOBILE, AL - The Jacksonville Suns (4-5, 40-39) dropped the final two games of the series to the Mobile BayBears (5-5, 47-32), falling 6-5 in a game resumed from Friday and 3-0 in the rubber match on Saturday from Hank Aaron Stadium.

In game four of the series, Kyle Winkler (W, 1-0) earned his first win of the year after holding the Suns without a run on one hit with two strikeouts in his 2.2 innings of work.

Kaleb Fleck (SV, 6) collected his sixth save of the year despite allowing one run (earned) on three hits in 1.0 inning of work, striking out two batters along the way.

Matt Montgomery went three innings in his spot start, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits, while walking and striking out one batter apiece.

Frankie Reed was electric in his two hitless innings of relief, striking out three BayBears in total.

James Leverton (H, 1) allowed one run (earned) on two hits in his 2.1 innings of work, striking out three BayBears while not issuing a single walk.

Nick Wittgren (L, 3-4; BS, 5) blew the save and took the loss after allowing a pair of runs (both earned) on three hits while walking one batter in 0.2 innings of work.

The BayBears scored first in Friday's ballgame, grabbing an early 1-0 lead after Jake Lamb grounded into a force out which scored Sean Jamieson from third base in the bottom of the first inning.

Mobile added to its lead in the bottom of the second, as Sean Jamieson's two-out RBI triple extended the lead to 2-0 in favor of the BayBears.

Jacksonville plated its first run in the top of the third when Austin Nola scored on a wild pitch from Charles Brewer to make it a 2-1 Mobile lead.

But the BayBears answered right back in the bottom of the third, using a two-out RBI single from Jon Griffin to make it a 3-1 lead for Mobile.

The Suns took the lead in the top of the sixth when Southern League All-Star Brady Shoemaker (HR, 6) hit a three-run home run to right center field to put the Suns in front 4-3.

The rain then came down with Joe Benson on first and one out in the top of the sixth, causing Friday's game to be suspended until Saturday afternoon.

After the game was resumed on Saturday, the BayBears took a 6-4 lead after receiving RBI singles from Jon Griffin, Garrett Weber and Sean Jamieson in the bottom of the eighth inning.

However, the Suns wouldn't go down with a fight in the top of the ninth. Isaac Galloway (HR, 2) hit a one-out solo homer to bring the Suns to within one run, but it was the BayBears holding on for a 6-5 victory in game four of the series.

In the series finale, it was the BayBears doing the only scoring in the rubber match, with Mobile emerging with a 3-0 shutout victory to assure themselves of a series victory.

A.J. Schugel (W, 4-1) picked up the win after tossing 5.2 innings of shutout ball. He'd allow five hits and three walks while striking out five Suns in the rubber match.

Seth Simmons (H, 2) tossed 1.1 innings of hitless relief, striking out two batters along the way.

R.J. Hively (SV, 1) notched his first save of the 2014 season after tossing two shutout innings, allowing only two hits while striking out a pair of Suns.

Jose Urena (L, 6-6) took the loss for Jacksonville after allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits in seven innings of work. The righty didn't walk a batter and struck out a half dozen BayBears. After allowing two runs in the first inning, Urena shut Mobile out over the next five innings and allowed his final run in the bottom of the seventh.

James Nygren tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning in his one full inning of work.

The BayBears got the scoring going in the rubber match, receiving a leadoff homer from Sean Jamieson (HR, 5) and a RBI single from Todd Glaesmann in his first game in a BayBears uniform to give Mobile a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Mobile would be held without another run until the bottom of the seventh inning when Dustin Martin (HR, 5) led off the inning with a solo shot to make it a 3-0 BayBears lead. His home run would cap off the scoring in the rubber match.

The Suns will travel to Pensacola for a five-game set with the Blue Wahoos, with first pitch of Sunday's series-opening game set for 4:00 p.m. CT (5:00 p.m. ET). The Suns will send out left-hander Chipper Smith (2-3, 4.46) while the BayBears will counter with right-hander Daniel Corcino (7-6, 4.19).
