Mississippi Braves News Release

Birmingham, AL - Cedric Hunter broke a 4-4 tie game in the eighth with a solo home run off the left field foul pole, and the Mississippi Braves held on for a 5-4 win over the Birmingham Barons on Saturday night at Regions Field.

The win also gave them the series by taking three of five, their second straight second half series victory.

The two clubs battled in yet another back-and-forth affair, with the Braves (6-4, 45-34) striking first off starter Scott Snodgress in the first frame. Jose Peraza led off the game with a walk and appeared picked off when Dan Black underthrew his shortstop Jaime Pedroza to allow an advance to second. A wild pitch moved Peraza to third and Mycal Jones drove in the first run with a ground out to short.

The Barons (4-5, 33-46) bounced back to tie the game in the first. Jared Mitchell doubled off Mitch Atkins and Trayce Thompson drew a walk. The two baserunners attempted a double steal, but Mitchell was thrown out at third. A wild pitch moved Thompson up to third base and came in to score on a Black fielder's choice to first.

Birmingham broke the tie in the second when Jaime Pedroza came to the plate and launched a two-run shot against his former team, his fifth of the season for a 3-1 lead.

Mississippi scored four of the final five runs, scratching back into the game in the fifth and sixth off Snodgress. In the fifth, Barrett Kleinknecht singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a Gustavo Nunez sac bunt, scoring when Braeden Schlehuber hit a sacrifice line to center to pull it to 3-2.

The Braves tied the game again 3-3 in the sixth. Jones singled to lead off and Seth Loman continued his dominance of his former club with an RBI double off the left field wall.

Birmingham regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, getting three straight singles from Pedroza, Jeremy Farrell and Dan Wagner for an RBI to make it 4-3.

Mississippi tied it again at 4-4 in the seventh when Nunez singled and scored on a Peraza two-out line drive single. That set up the Hunter launch for the win.

John Cornely (6-2) earned the win in relief for the Braves, pitching the final three innings without allowing a run on two hits, striking out two and walking one. He stranded men at the corners to end the game when Rangel Ravelo flied to center for the final out. Atkins took a no decision after allowing foru runs on ten hits over six frames, striking out four with one walk.

Bryan Blough (1-1) took the loss and his first blown save, allowing two earned runs on three hits over an inning of work. Snodgress allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one.

The Braves now return home for a five-game set beginning Sunday at 5:00 PM CT with the Huntsville Stars, double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Right-hander Jason Hursh (6-4, 3.48) will toe the rubber for the M-Braves in the opener.

Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 4:30 PM CT on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
