Jay Rogers (W, 4-2) earned his fourth win as a Jacksonville Sun on Friday, surrendering a lone run (earned) on six hits and three walks in five innings of work.
Greg Nappo (H, 7) continued his brilliant 2014 season by tossing two hitless innings of relief.
James Nygren (H, 1) allowed one run (earned) on two hits in his 0.2 innings of work.
Matt Ramsey (SV, 7) picked up his seventh save of the year and his first as a Jacksonville Sun after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a pair of Smokies.
Corey Black (L, 4-6) took the tough-luck loss for Tennessee after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits in a season-best seven innings of work. Black tied his season high with eight strikeouts while not walking a single batter.
The Smokies opened up the scoring on Friday when Addison Russell put Tennessee up 1-0 with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
Jacksonville had their response in the next half inning, tying the game at 1-1 when Austin Barnes came around from first to score on Brady Shoemaker's two-out RBI double.
With J.T. Realmuto batting, the Suns took their first lead of the game at 2-1 with two outs in the top of the sixth when Alfredo Lopez came down to score on Corey Black's wild pitch.
The Suns pushed their lead to 3-1 in the top of the eighth when Brent Keys scored on a RBI force out off the bat of Austin Barnes.
But the Smokies answered right back, with Christian Villanueva (HR, 2) leading off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to left center to cut Jacksonville's lead to 3-2.
Jacksonville got that run right back in the top of the ninth when Joe Benson (HR, 7) hit his team-leading seventh home run of the year to put the Suns in front 4-2.
The Suns and Smokies will be back at it on Saturday night, with first pitch set for 6:15 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out right-hander Robert Morey (0-0, 4.05) while the Smokies will counter with a righty of their own in Pierce Johnson (2-2, 3.79).
