Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds couldn't find the offense against the Hagerstown Suns, dropping a 5-0 decision on Monday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Kyle Johnston (1-2) picked up the win for the Suns (1-3, 23-44) with six scoreless innings, allowing five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Chris Tillman (0-1) took the loss in his MLB rehab assignment for the Shorebirds (2-3, 37-35), allowing two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. Tillman walked one and struck out three.
Hagerstown wasted no time jumping on Tillman in the first inning. Luis Garcia doubled with two outs, then Omar Meregildo doubled to score Garcia, and Jake Scudder laced a single into right to plate Meregildo and make it 2-0 Suns.
Trevor Craport led off with a triple in the Shorebirds' half of the second but went no further, one of a handful of missed opportunities for Delmarva on the night.
Max Knutson took the baton from Tillman in the fourth and got two easy outs, then DL Hall entered to start the fifth inning. In the sixth, Nick Choruby reached on an error at third to lead off, and three batters later Scudder went yard to the right field corner, pushing the Suns lead to 4-0.
Delmarva had another scoring chance in the sixth inning against Johnston with two outs. Zach Jarrett singled and Craport doubled to put two runners in scoring position, but Branden Becker grounded out to short to end the threat.
The Suns tacked on another run in an eighth inning sparked by a Garcia leadoff single. Meregildo hit a grounder to third, but Craport's throw sailed into right, turning a potential double play into men on the corners with one out. Garcia eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the game its final margin.
Craport had a solid night for the Shorebirds, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and HBP. Kirvin Moesquit had two hits, including a double.
Scudder led the way for the Suns, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Garcia went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.
The Shorebirds wrap up their three-game series against the Suns on Tuesday night. Jhon Peluffo (0-3, 10.59) will look to get Delmarva back to their winning ways against Hagerstown's Jackson Tetrealut (1-6, 5.37). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Tuesday is the first Ticket Amnesty Night of the season; any unused 2018 tickets can be redeemed for an Upper Reserved ticket. It's also a Silver Slugger Game presented by Peninsula Home Care. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
