Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Kicking off a seven-game road trip, the Arizona Sundogs faced off against Southwest Division opponent the New Mexico Scorpions Wednesday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Arizona would find itself trailing several times throughout the contest but CHL leading goal scorer Brent Kelly and forward David Svagrovsky would help the Sundogs to a 3-2 shootout victory. With the win Arizona sits just three points back of division leading New Mexico and moves into a tie for second place in the Southwest Division and fourth place in the Southern Conference playoff race with the Amarillo Gorillas.
The New Mexico Scorpions would strike first Wednesday night as Mike Falk would tally the game's first goal at 12:25 of the first period. On passes from Vladimir Hartinger and Lance Herauf, Falk would find the back of the net driving the puck past Sundogs netminder Kris Mayotte to give his club a 1-0 lead.
The Sundogs would answer back early in the second period as Brent Kelly would score on the power play unassisted, collecting his CHL leading 39 goal of the season to even the game's score at 1-1.
Midway through the third period New Mexico would regain its one-goal lead as Mike Prpich would tip a Aaron MacInnis shot from the point past Mayotte to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Scorpions. Craig MacDonald would also grab a helper on the go ahead marker. Less than two minutes later Arizona would once again tie the game on Kelly's second power play goal of the night, this time from Brad Mehalko and Dan Laperriere. The third period would end in a 2-2 stalemate, forcing overtime.
Both teams would see chances in the overtime period but neither would be able to take advantage, resulting in a shootout. New Mexico would take an early 1-0 lead in the shootout after a Karl Sellan miss and Konrad Reeder goal. Both teams would miss the next three chances, forcing Arizona into a score-or-lose situation. Kelly would be the number five shooter for the Sundogs and would convert. Jamie Herrington would miss for New Mexico to force extra frames in the shootout. David Svagrovsky would eventually grab the game winner as Mayotte would make a save on Christopher Robertson's to secure the 3-2 win.
Arizona would outshoot New Mexico 33-29 in the contest with Kris Mayotte stopping 27-of-29 shots for his sixth win in as many starts. Scott Reid would be credited with the loss, deflecting 30-of-33 shots faced. The Sundogs finished 2-for-5 with the man advantage while the Scorpions were unable to collect a power play goal finishing 0-for-4.
The two teams face off again on Friday night in Rio Rancho as the Sundogs try and secure another two points in both the Southwest Division race and Southern Conference playoff race. The Sundogs currently sit in second place in the Southwest Division with a record of 27-24-1 for 55 points.
