March 1, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Youngstown SteelHounds News Release
Thursday night saw the Youngstown SteelHounds keep their hot streak going as for the second time in four nights they defeated division rival Memphis by a score of 5-4 in a shootout at the Chevrolet Centre.
The unlikeliest of goal scorers got it going for the Hounds with five minutes to play in the first period as Milan Maslonka recorded his first professional goal to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead. Memphis ended the first period with a Brad Wanchulak to go to intermission tied at one.
In the second period the scoring got red hot with both teams netting two goals with to send the game into the third period tied at three. Ryan Held and Derek Landmesser scored for the RiverKings while Youngstown got its two second period tallies from Mark Odut and Stephen Margeson.
The third period was nip and tuck all the way until the Hounds went down two men to the penalty box with under five minutes to play. That is when Steve Makway connected on his eighth goal of the season to give Memphis a 4-3 lead. The RiverKings committed their own penalty with exactly two minutes to play and the Hounds took full advantage with Chris Shaffer scoring his 12th of the year, this on the power play to tie the game at four and force overtime and the eventual shootout.
After the scheduled five rounds the score was tied at one but in the eighth round it was Josh Reed beating Larry Sterling to score his first goal of the season and give the SteelHounds a 5-4 victory on Thursday night. The win is Youngstown's fourth straight and their sixth in their last seven games with the last five games going to at least overtime. Brad Roberts made franchise history as the win gives him four in a row which sets a new team record. The Hounds have now defeated the Kings twice in a row as they won back in Memphis just six days ago. The win keeps the Hounds on pace with the Oklahoma City Blazers for the fourth seed in the Northern Conference Playoffs as they improve to 27-16-9 (63pts). Despite the loss because the game went to overtime the RiverKings earn a much needed point and take back soul possession of first place in the Northeast division as their record is now 34-13-5 (73pts).
These two teams play game two of their three game set at 7:05pm with the famous Hanson Brothers from the cult classic, "Slap Shot" being in attendance, tickets are still available by calling the Hounds at (330) 747-PUCK!
