Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs hosted the Lubbock Cotton Kings in the first of a two-game weekend series. Arizona and Lubbock are both battling to climb up in the tight Southwest Division standings. In front of a sellout crowd of 4,845 fans, the Sundogs would battle back from several deficits only to come up short in the end. Brent Kelly, Karl Sellan and Adam Campbell would team up for a combined 7 points in the loss.
The Arizona Sundogs would come out firing early outshooting Lubbock 5-0. The pressure would pay off as Dmitri Leonov would score his first goal as a Sundog just 2:56 into the first period. Adam Campbell and Chris Greene would help on the play. Lubbock would answer back at the 11:25 mark as Anders Strome would grab a power play goal from Bobby Brown and Kyle Nosan tying the game at 1-1. As the first period started to wind down, Bobby Brown and Kyle Nosan would again partner to set up Simon Watson for the go ahead goal at 17:04.
The Cotton Kings would carry their first period momentum into the second as Anders Strome would notch his second power play goal of the game just 1:03 in. Assists on the play would again come from Bobby Brown and Kyle Nosan. At 5:16 of the middle frame the Sundogs would break out of their own zone with Adam Campbell feeding Karl Sellan. The streaking Sellan would skate past a defender feeding Brent Kelly in the front of the net for his league-leading 26th goal of the season. With less than three minutes to play in the middle frame Sundogs' forward Jon Landry stripped a Lubbock defenseman at his own blue line and skated in alone only to fan on the puck. The Cotton Kings gained possession and skated in with Watson scoring his second of the night past the glove of Chris King. It seemed as though Lubbock would carry a two-goal lead into the third period but hard work down low on the power play would lead to a Sundogs tally with just 16 seconds left in the middle frame. Sellan would grab his second point of the night putting in a JF Perras rebound. Brent Kelly and Cory Stillman would collect assists on the play.
The third period's first goal would be scored by the Cotton Kings at the mark, once again giving them a two-goal lead. Sundogs' netminder Chris King would be screened on a shot from just inside the blue line by Anders Strome. Brown and Nosan would be credited with assists. Sundogs Head Coach would replace King with Kris Mayotte after the Cotton Kings' fifth goal. At 13:57 of the third, the Sundogs would once again put a dent in Lubbock's lead as Stillman would punch in a Jordan Mowbray rebound past Perras to bring the Sundogs back to within one. Arizona would pull replacement netminder Kris Mayotte for an extra offensive skater to try and even the score. The Sundogs would get the pressure they wanted but Perras would be up to the test. Lubbock's Jason Beatty would add an empty net goal to close the game at 6-4.
Starting netminder Chris King stopped 12 of 17 shots while his replacement Kris Mayotte stopped all three shots he faced. Lubbock netminder fared better blocking 46 of 50 shots for the win. Arizona doubled Lubbock in shots, 50 to 21. The Sundogs finished 1-for-8 with the man advantage while the Cotton Kings finished 2-for-6. The two clubs face one and other again tomorrow for a 5:00pm start.
