Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Colorado Eagles squared off in their fifth meeting of the 2006-07 season and first since the CHL All-Star break. First period penalty troubles would result in a 3-0 deficit early on in the game. The Sundogs would fight back in the second to cut the deficit to two but would run out of time in the third to drop their third straight. The Sundogs are now 16-16-1 in the Southwest Division.

The Sundogs would put themselves in a hole early as Ryan Steeves and Cory Stillman would be tagged with hooking and tripping calls within one minute of each other to give the Eagles a 5-on-3 advantage. Arizona would kill off the first penalty but as Ryan Steeves would exit the box Riley Nelson would score his 20th goal of the season on passes from Brad Williamson and Chris Hartsburg to take an early 1-0 lead. At the 10:37 mark Jonathan Bernier would be called for interference giving the Eagles their third power play of the game. The CHL's top power play would need only 30 seconds to take a two-goal lead as Sean Robertson would score from the point. Seth Leonard and Ed McGrane were credited with the assists. The Sundogs would continue to take penalties giving the Eagles power play chances in which they would capitalize. At 14:57 of the first Hartsburg would score on a feed from Erik Adams and Nelson tallying Colorado's third power play goal of the night. Tempers would flare at the close of the first as both clubs would collect penalties.

The Sundogs came out a different team in the second period with 15 shots, more than doubling their shot output in the first. Arizona would hold the Eagles scoreless in the period as Sundogs' netminder Chris King would make 15 saves. While holding Colorado scoreless, Arizona would cut the lead back to two as CHL leading scorer Brent Kelly would grab his 25th goal of the season. The 5-on-3 power play goal would come at 11:20 of the middle frame from Dmitri Leonov and Chris Bartolone.

Both teams would calm in the third period taking less penalties than the previous two periods. The Sundogs would apply pressure in the final period but would be unable to overcome their poor first period play. The Eagles outshot the Sundogs 43-30 in the contest. Sundogs' netminder Chris King made 40 saves on the night while Eagles' netminder Tim Boron made 29 saves in the 3-1 win. Arizona converted on 1 of 10 power play opportunities while Colorado capitalized on 3 of 11 chances.
