Spokane Chiefs News Release

So much for summer vacation. Before the Chiefs hit the ice for the first time in their Annual Fall Camp scheduled to begin on Friday, August 22nd, a number of team members will have already gone through the paces of pro and national team camps.

Jared Spurgeon and Dustin Tokarski will be cutting their summer short to take part in Team Canada's Junior Evaluation Camp that begins on Friday and runs through Wednesday, July 30th.

For Spurgeon, a 19-year-old to be, it comes at the heels of the New York Islanders prospects camp earlier this month. The Islanders made the Chiefs defenseman their sixth round pick in the NHL Entry Draft in June after he led all Spokane defenseman in scoring and plus-minus.

Tokarski, a fifth round selection of Tampa Bay, will be missing out on the Lightning's prospects camp while attending Team Canada's. The MVP of the Memorial Cup is one of four goaltenders, three from the WHL including Tri-City's Chet Pickard and Vancouver's Tyson Sexsmith, invited to the camp.

Team Canada's camp will take place at the University of Ottawa and will help identify the final roster for the World Junior Hockey Championships in December.

Chiefs Head Coach Bill Peters is preparing to serve the same post for Canada's under-18 squad that will play in the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka in Czech Republic and Slovakia from August 12-16. Peters' first step will be overseeing the 40 player evaluation camp in early August in Calgary, a camp Chiefs defenseman Jared Cowen will also participate in. Team Canada has won gold at the event three of the past four years.

Three U.S. born players, Drayson Bowman, Tyler Johnson and Mitch Wahl, will leave for Lake Placid, NY for the American's junior evaluation camp set to begin on Friday, August 1st. All three will be candidates for Team U.S.A's Junior Team for December's tournament. The camp will run through Saturday, August 9th.
