Sugar Skulls Travel to Vegas for Western Conference Battle

June 2, 2023 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Tucson Sugar Skulls News Release

TUCSON - The Tucson Sugar Skulls will hit the road to take on the Vegas Knight Hawks at the Dollar Loan Center on Saturday afternoon.

The game start time has been moved up to 12:05 pm Arizona time (2:05 pm central time). It will be the third meeting between the teams all-time, as Tucson currently holds a 2-0 lead over the Knight Hawks.

During Vegas's inaugural season in 2022, the Knight Hawks dropped a pair of close contests to the Skulls, including their first game in franchise history on March 27th in Vegas. The Knight Hawks (4-5) and Sugar Skulls (4-4) are currently 4th and tied for 5th in the Western Conference standings, making this a pivotal matchup with playoff-seeding implications.

IN A RUSH

The Tucson Sugar Skulls have had one of the best rushing attacks this season in the IFL. They currently sit fourth in average yards per game at 87.3. This is thanks in large part to running back Mike Jones who is one of the top-performing rushers in the IFL yet again.

Running back/special teams extraordinaire Benjamin Jones has also returned for the Skulls, providing a spark in kick returns and providing another offensive weapon for the Skulls team after providing 71 all-purpose yards against Bay Area last week.

SCORING SKULLS

The Sugar Skulls have two players in the top ten points scored per game this season in the IFL. Wide receiver Carrington Thompson currently sits at number ten overall with 12.0 ppg, and RB Mike Jones sits in seventh averaging 12.9 ppg. The dynamic duo has once again been leading the charge for the Sugar Skulls offense for the second consecutive season despite all the changes around them on that side of the ball.

DEFENSIVE PRESSURE

Defensive lineman Maurice Jackson has been an active defensive performer throughout the season, picking up where he left off in 2022 for the Skulls. He currently sits third in total sacks (5) this year, and fourth in tackles for loss with 9.5.

The Sugar Skulls have currently allowed the second least amount of first downs in the IFL at just 132. They are only trailing the league-leading Frisco Fighters by one in that category.
