York Revolution News Release
The Sugar Land Skeeters used a five-run third inning to spoil the opening game of a seven-game homestand for the York Revolution, taking a 7-3 victory on Monday evening in front of 3,324 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revs will look to bounce back on Tuesday with a twi-night doubleheader set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Both games will last seven innings.
Sugar Land scored five times in the third inning to take control, and never looked back. Ryde Rodriguez kicked things off with a swinging bunt hit, and Bubba Bell stroked a one-out double to left-center putting runners at second and third. Revs starter Matt Chico fell behind Miguel Negron before putting him on base intentionally, and then jumped ahead of Josh Pressley, only to lose him to a base on balls forcing in the first run. Ofilio Castro then smacked a two-run double to left-center, Pressley scored on a wild pitch, and Matt Hagen capped the rally with an RBI double to right field as the Skeeters took a 5-0 lead.
Sugar Land starter Jason Lane (1-0), once a major league outfielder, tossed five scoreless innings in his first career starting assignment, allowing just two hits and walking none to earn his first win.
York broke up the shutout with a run off reliever Pedro Liriano in the sixth, driven home on a groundout by Ramon Castro. But after having second and third with no outs, York could manage only one run. Two innings earlier, the Revs had second and third with no outs, but Lane came back to retire the next three, eliminating a previous York threat.
Sugar Land tacked on a run in the eighth on a bloop single by Iggy Suarez, expanding their lead to 6-1.
Liu Rodriguez ripped an RBI single into right-center and Castro lined a sacrifice fly to center bringing York within 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth, but Gary Majewski prevented the Revs from drawing any closer finishing a five-out save, his sixth save of the season.
Sugar Land added one more in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Pressley, and attempted to plate one more, but Michael Hernandez made a perfect throw home after catching a line out, nailing Negron at home plate trying to score from third to end the inning.
Chico (0-1) suffered the loss in his debut performance, charged with five runs in four innings of work.
The Revs managed just seven hits. Brandon Haveman went 3-for-4 with a double, while Rodriguez was 2-for-4 on the night. Sugar Land pitchers prevented any of York's hitters from the third through sixth spots in the order from collecting a hit.
York's Corey Thurman (5-1, 4.24) will face Ryan Ketchner (0-2, 13.50) in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, with lefty Chris Waters (0-0, 0.00) facing Sugar Land's Derrick Gordon (1-3, 5.83) in the nightcap. It is Engineering Night at Sovereign Bank Stadium, as well as a WellSpan Health Silver Sluggers Club Tuesday with Shurfine Baseball Bingo, and it is Boomer's Book Club Redemption Night #3 presented by Heritage Valley Federal Credit Union. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
