
Stutzel Nets Hat Trick in 6-2 Falcons Win

Springfield, MA â Rookie Mike Stutzel posted a natural hat trick as the Springfield Falcons defeated the Worcester IceCats, 6-2, at the Springfield Civic Center on Friday night. Forwards Krystofer Kolanos and Chris Ferraro notched a goal and an assist apiece for Springfield. The win improved the Falcons record to 1-1-1-1 in four games against the IceCats this season. IceCats center Mike Glumac scored both goals for Worcester.
Stutzel provided the Falcons with a 3-0 lead by scoring twice in the first period and completing his hat trick with a goal in the opening minute of the middle frame. Right wing Frank Banham's pass from below the goal line set up Stutzel's first goal 4:19 into the game. Stutzel scored again with 2:11 remaining in the first period when his centering feed from the corner banked off the skate of a Worcester defender and past IceCats netminder Reinhard Divis.
The Falcons outshot the âCats 13-2 in the first period.
Stutzel redirected a pass out of the corner by Chris Ferraro for his third tally of the game 34 seconds into the second period.
Falcons left wing Trevor Gillies registered his first goal of the season 1:13 later. On the tally, the 6'3", 230-pound forward blocked a shot from an IceCats defenseman, collected the puck in the neutral zone, and finished a breakaway with a shot between the pads of Divis.
Ferraro made the score 5-0 with the Falcons' first shorthanded goal of the season at 6:11 of the period.
Glumac potted two goals for the IceCats and Kolanos tallied once for the Falcons over the remainder of the second period. Kolanos scored his first goal since being assigned to Springfield last Saturday with a wrist shot from the top of the right wing face-off circle. Kolanos had a plus/minus rating of +4 for the game.
Neither team found the net in the third period.
Falcons goaltender David LeNeveu turned aside 26 of 28 shots to earn his fifth win of the campaign. Divis made 23 saves while yielding four of the Falcons' goals. Netminder Levente Szuper spelled Divis for 7:52 of the second period and surrendered two goals on four shots.
Springfield outshot the IceCats, 31-28, for the game.
Stutzel's hat trick was the first by a Falcons player since Shane Willis accomplished the feat in a 5-4 win against the Providence Bruins on February 1st. Stutzel now ranks second on the Falcons in goal scoring with eight markers on the season.
