Students more than triple projected goal

The final weekly numbers are in for this year's Reading is Wild program. Students at Hillsborough Elementary, Claude D. Taylor, Bessborough/Uplands and Magnetic Hill School reached a total of 44,356 book read in the past seven days.

Presented by the Moncton Wildcats, in partnership with RBC , the Times&Transcript and School District 2, the community literacy project, soared to 148, 419 books read this year. The 2009 program ended at noon February 13, 2009.

Over the 11 years Reading is Wild has produced an amazing total of 488,419 books read.

The breakdown for the individual schools for the final week showed Magnetic Hill School as the leader with 12,981 books read. Reader of the Week honours went to grade six student Aliyah Porter, while winners of weekly Wildcats prizes were Taylor Fisher, Ally Power, Corey Day and Haley Sherrard. Totals for the five weeks showed 47,533 books read, the original target was 15,000. Each student at the school read an average of 95.1 books during the five weeks.

Final week second place finishers were students at Bessborough/Uplands, 12,001 was their total. Shawn Philips was awarded Reader of the Week honours. Individual weekly winners were Connor Stuart, Nick Nowlan, Emelia Tkachuk and Morgan Chase. The school's goal for the year was to read 15,000 books, their grand five week total came in at 46,867, with each student reading an average of 99.7 books. .

Hillsborough Elementary School students came in third with a weekly total of 10,660 books read. Lauren Nelson, a grade two student was selected as Reader of the Week. Jessy Geldart, Dawson Lapointe, Marisa Steeves and Chevy Hutchinson were weekly winners. During the five weeks, the students read a total of 23,337 book, well over four times the projected goal of 5,000. The school's average reached 111.6 books read per student.

Riverview's Claude D. Taylor School's weekly total climbed to 8, 714 bringing their overall total to 30,362. Their target was 12,000. Kennedy Longaphie, who read consistently and avidly throughout the Reading is Wild program won Reader of the Week. Making the list as weekly winners were Noah McSheffery, Dakota Flewelling, Gavin Bragg, Geneva O'Blenis and Dylan Peterson. The students' average was 68.2 books per student per week.

Through the support of the sponsors, each school will receive $1,000 in books for libraries and one class from each school will be given a pizza party.

Bill Schurman, General Manager of the Wildcats offered congratulations to the schools, students and teachers for such an outstanding achievement. "This has been the most outstanding year in the history of Reading is Wild," he said. "Community projects such as this are made possible by corporate community support and we want to express our appreciation to the sponsors, RBC and the Times&Transcript along with the support of Scholastic Books and Boston Pizza. We are looking forward to year 12 of the program, when the program will top 500,000 books read," Mr. Schurman concluded.

Students taking part in the Reading is Wild program will be guests of the Wildcats on February 21st when they play the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and on February 22nd when the Cats host the Shawinigan Cataractes.
