Halifax Mooseheads News Release
The Halifax Mooseheads announced today that the Club will pay tribute to the Nova Scotia Voyageurs era at the Club's home game on Friday, February 27th against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. To highlight the event the Mooseheads will be wearing Nova Scotia Voyageurs replica jerseys.
"This will be a fun night for fans of all ages, but especially for those who remember watching the Vees during their time in Halifax. This is the 100th Anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens and fans will remember the numerous Canadiens stars who started their careers in Halifax," stated Brian Urquhart, Halifax Mooseheads Vice President Business Operations.
The Mooseheads plan to auction off the game worn Mooseheads Vees jerseys on their website (www.halifaxmooseheads.ca). All proceeds from the auction will go to the IWK Children's Hospital for purchase of a SMART Syringe Pump for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. A few former Vees are expected to be on hand for the event, and a number of Vees-related promotions will take place on game night.
It has been 25 years since the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, the farm club of the Montreal Canadiens, left Halifax. The Vees were the first AHL team in Atlantic Canada and the first Canadian team to win the Calder Cup when they accomplished the feat in 1972, 1976, and again in 1977. The Vees boast an impressive list of alumni players including Larry Robinson, Yvon Lambert, Pierre Mondou, Guy Charbonneau and Mike McPhee. Legendary coaches Al MacNeil (1971-77) and John Brophy (1981-84) both coached the Vees while in Halifax.
