Wichita Wingnuts News Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite four combined scoreless innings in relief from Scott Kuzminsky and Felix Carvallo, the Wichita Wingnuts late rally fell short in a 3-2 loss to the St. Paul Saints on Thursday night at CHS Field.

St. Paul (35-28) again seized the early advantage with a first inning run, this time courtesy of an RBI double from Brady Shoemaker. Wingnuts starter Charlie Gillies (5-3) limited the damage with a popup and a lineout, but the Saints would add to the lead in the third on an RBI groundout from Matt Snyder for a 2-0 advantage. Justin O'Conner tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth for St. Paul's final run of the evening.

Wichita (38-25) was held silent for the first six innings by Saints starter Chris Nunn (3-1), failing to get a runner to third base against the St. Paul southpaw. The Wingnuts finally broke through against former Wichita reliever Mike Devine, denting the scoreboard on RBI singles from Nick Rotola and Zach Nehrir that trimmed the lead to 3-2. Beck Wheeler came out of the St. Paul pen to limit the damage, then Zack Jones worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his fourth save.

Gillies took the loss for Wichita with four-plus innings of work, allowing eight hits and three runs, two earned. Nunn got the win with 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

The Wingnuts continue their NBC World Series road trip with a three-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries. Right-hander Tyler Kane (4-1, 4.67) will start for the Wingnuts, while the Canaries have not yet announced their starter. First pitch from Sioux Falls Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
