Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - With a pitching staff that picked up 15 strikeouts, the Augusta GreenJackets turned the West Virginia Power bats into wooden teeth, leaving the Power to gnaw at anything that came their way from Augusta pitching. The Jackets won 8-2 over West Virginia, their third win in a row.
The GreenJackets scored in three of the first four innings to build a four-run lead. Ehire Adrianza's groundout produced the game's first run, Wendell Fairley doubled in a pair in the second inning and walked with the bases full in the fourth and a fielder's choice produced run number five. West Virginia got on the board in the third on a Robbie Grossman RBI single.
Danny Bomback singled in a run in the seventh to bring the Power to within three. With two on and Ryan Verdugo on in relief of Eric Surkamp, Verdugo struck out Quincy Latimore and Grossman - both representing the tying run - to get out of a jam in the seventh. West Virginia never got closer as Josh Mazzola hit a three-run home run to put the game out of reach in the seventh.
Surkamp (6-4) battled through six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and eight hits. The bullpen once again held the Power at bay, as Ryan Verdugo and Shane Kaufman strung together three scoreless innings of one-hit baseball. Verdugo struck out six batters, striking out the side in both innings he pitched.
Rafael De Los Santos (0-3) threw four laborious innings to take the loss. He allowed five runs on five hits with four walks, striking out three.
Augusta will go for the four-game sweep on Thursday with Ari Ronick (6-4, 2.78) looking to reclaim the staff lead in victories from Surkamp. He'll face Brian Leach (3-0, 1.67) on another Thirsty Thursday with dollar soft drinks and domestic drafts available. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
