Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - Jeurys Familia had a start to remember for the Sand Gnats on Wednesday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium, as Savannah knocked off the Intimidators, 3-1.

Familia was perfect through the first five inning innings, keeping the Intimidators off the basepaths. Kenny Williams finally broke through for Kannapolis, singling off of Familia (7-6) to end the no-hitter. The Intimidators finished with four hits.

The Intimidators got their only run of the ballgame in that frame, using a Drew Garcia RBI groundout to bring a stretch of over 18 innings without a run to an end.

But the damage had already been done against Nevin Griffith (0-1), as Savannah tallied three runs, one earned, in the fourth frame. Sean Ratliff drove in a pair on an RBI double one batter after Eduardo Escobar mishandled a potential double-play ball. Giffith went a season-best six innings and struck out four.

Kannapolis had a terrific opportunity to rally against Gnats closer Rhiner Cruz in the ninth, putting the tying run on first with no outs. But Dan Black popped out and Brandon Short hit into a double play to end the contest. It was Cruz' 17th save in 17 tries.
