Streaks Stop with Stars Win

The Lincoln Stars recorded go-ahead goals in all three periods, eventually pulling away from the Waterloo Black Hawks for a 7-4 win Saturday at Young Arena.

The result ended a seven-game Stars losing streak. It also halted the Hawks' six-game home winning streak. Waterloo had started the home ice run on November 17th versus Lincoln.

Both teams owned a lead in the first period, with the Hawks jumping in front first at 5:56. Matej Blumel zipped up right wing and was able to get a defender turned around before he flipped a shot inside the opposite post.

The Stars scored the next two. Declan Carlile converted a power play, firing in a rebound chance from the left circle at 9:19. Just over five minutes later, Lincoln's Caleb Rule scored into an open side to cap an odd-man rush.

However the Stars gave up the lead while attempting to widen it. During a power play, Jacob Bengtsson sprang Wyatt Schingoethe on a shorthanded breakaway. Schingoethe held the puck while moving by the front of the net, and at the last possible moment slipped his shot past Tyler Johnson. It was the Hawks' seventh shorthanded goal of the year.

The pattern repeated itself in the second. At 5:49, Kyle Haskins gave Waterloo the lead, using a backpedaling defender as a screen to beat Johnson with a wrister from the right circle.

The Stars scored the next two. Tristan Ashbrook stepped up the slot on a feed from Rule and squeezed a shot inside the post. Then Shane Pinto powered in a blast from the right point on the power play at 16:55.

However, for the second consecutive period, a late Black Hawks goal tied it up. With 58.5 seconds to go before intermission, James Marooney sent Blumel on a breakaway with a long pass from deep in the defensive zone. Johnson deflected the resulting shot up in the air, but when it came down, it hit Johnson and bounced across the goal line.

It was all Lincoln in the third; the Stars took the lead for good at 6:23. Mason Klee's shot was partially blocked but rolled to the side of the net, where Max Ellis stuffed it in.

Waterloo was turned away on two power plays in the middle stages of the third, but continued to apply pressure. Lincoln stifled the Hawks' bid for an equalizer with 1:26 remaining; Josiah Slavin chipped in a shot from the doorstep on a pass across the top of the crease from Pinto. Less than a minute later, Devlin McCabe added one more into an empty net.

The Hawks' next games are part of a weekend swing to Kearney, Nebraska, next Friday and Saturday to visit the Western Conference-leading Tri-City Storm.
