Randazzo, Smyth Help Saints to Shootout Win over Omaha

The Fighting Saints snapped a three-game losing streak with their first shootout win of the season as they pushed past the Omaha Lancers 2-1 on Saturday night. Dubuque won in their 10th one goal game in the last 11. Patrick Smyth scored the lone goal in the shootout and Aaron Randazzo made 25 saves for his fifth win of the season.

-Randazzo, after two shaky starts before this one, was the exact opposite for Dubuque. Save for a rebound goal, he was perfect and made a few high-quality stops for Dubuque. Randazzo grabbed his fifth win of the season with the 25 save effort and he also stopped all three shots in the shootout.

-Jack Robbel was equally as good for Omaha. In just his third game of the season, Robbel stopped 35 Fighting Saints shots and kept his team in it with Dubuque buzzing late in the second and for most of the third. The Fighting Saints outshot Omaha 25-16 after the first period.

-The three on three overtime was uneventful, or as uneventful as a three on three can be. Omaha had two shots in the extra five minutes and Dubuque had none as both teams seemed to play things conservative.

-Riese Gaber, Matias Maccelli and Logan Pietila were reunited as a line and produced well all night. Gaber scored the lone Dubuque goal, Maccelli grabbed a secondary assist and Pietila was a solid presence on that line as well.

-Dubuque won their first shootout this season with a snipe from Patrick Smyth. Smyth played serious minutes with Cooper Haar and Derek Contessa in this game and he was rewarded for good play with the shootout call. The Haar, Smyth, Contessa line combined for 10 shots on net.

-Dubuque got a much-needed home win as well in this game. Heading in the team had lost three in a row on home ice, all by one goal. You could sense urgency in Dubuque's game as they pushed the envelope in the third period.

-Omaha lost their third shootout game of the season in as many tries. The Lancers offense looked good in the first period, but after that slowed down and only showed bursts. Aleksi Peltonen tallied the only goal for the Lancers.

-The win pushed Dubuque back in to third place in the east as they are still tied with Central Illinois at now 32 points. Dubuque is three points out of second place and just one point behind Youngstown and Cedar Rapids in fifth and sixth respectively.

-Next week will be busy for the Fighting Saints as they have three games, Friday Saturday and Sunday against Green Bay, Lincoln and Madison.
