Streaking Hoppers Closing In

Lexington, Ky. - The gap between Greensboro and Northern Division-leading Lake County was reduced by one half game Wednesday as the Hoppers took the series-opener of a three-game set against Lexington, 7-4.

With the top three teams in the division all setting idle due to poor weather conditions at their respective game locations, Greensboro was able to knock one half game off of the lead to move within three and one half games of the Captains.

Ryan Curry launched what eventually became a 7-0 Greensboro advantage with a lead-off home run in the third inning. It was the first of three hits for Curry in the contest and extended Greensboro's home run streak to 10 games.

The Hoppers tacked on four runs in all during the third inning before plating three more in the fourth. Greensboro combined to score all seven of its runs on 10 hits during the-two inning stretch.

Along with Greensboro's 10-game home run streak and its third consecutive victory, Bryan Petersen singled for the Hoppers in the third inning to extend his hit streak to 13 games. Petersen's single was the third of four consecutive hits Greensboro had to open the third inning and extended the league's longest active hit streak.

Stuart Alexander started for Greensboro and was happy to see his streak snapped. Entering the game, Alexander had suffered losses in each of his last three outings.

After five innings on the hill, Alexander gave way to the bullpen with a 7-2 lead; four innings later he was credited with his fifth win of the season to improve to 5-5.

Lexington responded to Greensboro's three-run fourth inning with to of its own runs, but was held to just two hits through the final four innings. Don Czyz and Corey Madden shut out the Legends in three innings of combined work and struck out five batters.

The Legends added two more runs to the losing effort in the final frame against Garrett Parcell. Parcell allowed both runs on one hit and one walk.

Game two of the three-game series will kick off Thursday at 7:00 p.m. from Applebee's Park. Greensboro is slated to send RHP Kyle Kaminska to the mound; the Legends are expected to counter with LHP Tommy Vessella (0-1, 0.82).
