Streak reaches ten...then Mavs pull a 180

June 8, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Mid-Missouri Mavericks News Release

Pictures of Mavericks' fans with bags on their heads. A quote from Mavs' manager Jim Gentile lamenting, "You can't see it, but I'm panicking." "I've never lost 10 games in a row for any team I played with or managed." A local reporter claiming that the Mavericks games had turned into nothing more than a "sideshow element" because of their losing.

It certainly was not what the Mavericks' Front Office was predicting or hoping for to begin the 2005 season. With a 7 - 3 loss to the Gateway Grizzlies, the Mavericks record fell to 0 - 10. The losing streak included a heartbreaking tenth inning, bases loaded hit-batter that drove in the winning run for the other team. The losing streak included a two run, ninth- inning lead, that turned into a one run, ninth-inning loss. The streak even had Gentile claiming that he might "come out to home plate with a bag on my head pretty soon."

But on June 6th, against the Gateway Grizzlies - one year to the day that the Mavericks' ended their franchise worst 11-game losing streak - the 2005 streak was stopped. After the Grizzlies tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, the Mavericks' bats exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning - all but sealing the 12-7 victory. The streak was dead.

Then, early this morning (June 8th), only hours after a 523 mile bus ride to Kalamazoo, Michigan, Steve Soja tossed a brilliant complete game 6-hitter to spoil the morning for nearly 3,000 elementary kids on the first of two "Kalamazoo School Day" contests. With the 4 - 1 victory, the Mavs have now won two games in a row. Will the Mavs actually start a winning streak? Only time will tell.

But it's probably a safe bet that the paper bags won't be necessary for a while.

Mavericks' Booster Club Information

There's a hole in the outfield fence...a knothole really...just barely big enough for the kid to get a glimpse of some real pros. But he can't quite see through it yet...he's just not quite tall enough.

Next time you're at the ballpark, or on the Internet, find out more about the Booster Club's Knothole Gang. On Friday nights, the Booster half of their 50/50 Raffle proceeds will go to a children's charity. It's a great way to raise both money and awareness for some local kids in need of a lift.

The Mavericks' Booster Club - providing fun, action and sports for the community through its outreach to the Mavericks players. If you'd like to join the Mavericks' Booster Club, come to their next meeting - June 18th. They're setting up for tailgating in the parking lot of Taylor Stadium at 4PM and eating at 5PM.
