Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. â The Rockford RiverHawks rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and the bullpen was perfect in a 4-1 win over the River City Rascals.
A crowd of 3,723 turned out for the final Opening Night at Marinelli Field. The RiverHawks move into a new stadium on July 21.
Rockford never trailed in the game. The RiverHawks took the lead in the second inning on Gooby Gerlits' double to right, but the Rascals rallied for an unearned run off starter Joe Barbosa in the sixth.
The âHawks came back with three unearned runs in the eighth inning off reliever Pat Evers (0-1), who made his professional debut. Two errors and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with nobody out. The Rascals brought the infield in and John Chappell blooped a RBI single behind the shortstop and Olmo Rosario singled up the middle to drive in two insurance runs.
Derrick Ellison and Bobby Mack combined to pitch 2 2/3 perfect innings in relief of Barbosa. Ellison (1-2) came on with two on and one down in the seventh and retired all five he faced for the win. Mack pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Thirsty Thursday. It's Panino's Magnet Schedule Night, as well as the first Miller Lite Dollar Beer Night of the year.
