Streak Continues For Barnstormers

September 1, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The sixth straight win for the Lancaster Barnstormers was one of the team's most impressive shows of the 2009 season.

Lancaster pounded six extra base hits against Esteban Yan, one of the Atlantic League's premier starters, played stellar defense, got another quality start from Jason Scobie and strong work out of the bullpen. Altogether, they spelled a 5-3 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish in the second game of a four-game series.

The win kept the Barnstormers within five games of Newark and 5 ½ of Long Island in the chase for the wild card berths in the Atlantic League. In addition, Lancaster now only trails the Bluefish by 1 ½ games.

Lloyd Turner belted a 3-1 offering from Yan (11-6) out of the ballpark to left field leading off the game, and the Barnstormers were never caught. The next batter, Anderson Machado beat out an infield single, stole second and took third on catcher Luis Rodriguez' throwing error. L.J. Biernbaum's ground ball to second brought Machado across with the second run of the inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Barnstormers added a third run in the second. Matt Watson cracked a long double to left center to start the inning. One out later, Gerard Haran rapped a single off the third base bag. Watson barely beat Tyrone Pendergrass' throw to the plate, and the Barnstormers were up, 3-0.

Meanwhile, the Lancaster defense got Scobie through the early innings. Adam Greenberg led off the first with a single to center, but the Bridgeport center fielder was frozen by Scobie's pickoff move and was eventually tagged out in a rundown. Pendergrass walked, then stole second. Luis Lopez cracked a line drive to left field, but Turner raced in and made a diving catch. Pendergrass was around third base when the ball was caught and was easily doubled off second.

Aaron Herr made a diving stop of Jesse Hoorelbeke's sharp grounder toward the hole to start the second. Brandon Sing lined a base hit to left. He was thrown out stealing for the second out. Colin Roberson beat out a ground single toward the middle that was stopped by Cesar Suarez. Luis Rodriguez laced a line drive into right center that skipped past Biernbaum for a triple, cutting the lead to 3-1.

Suarez roped a homer to left, starting the fifth as Lancaster went up, 4-1.

Scobie (7-8) settled down and carried the lead into the seventh inning but was lifted after yielding a one-out solo homer to left by Sing, his 21st of the season. The Barnstormers' right-hander finished the night, allowing eight hits while walking one and striking out four.

Michael Woods clubbed a long double to left center with one out in the eighth, and Yan walked Biernbaum. The Bluefish opted to keep Yan in the game to face Herr, and the 'Stormer third baseman responded with a deep fly ball to dead center. Woods scored, but the Barnstormers were cheated out of a second run when Herr's blast jumped over the home run fence for a ground rule double.

James Heuser got the final two outs in the seventh. The Barnstormers went to Kane Davis for the eighth. The new right-hander allowed a one-out single to Ryner Bautista and was replaced by Eric Ackerman. Ackerman would allow an RBI double into the left field corner by Pendergrass but got the final five outs, two on strikes, for his second save.

The Barnstormesr will take on Bridgeport again on Wednesday evening. Ricardo Gomez (4-1) will make a spot start for Lancaster against Dan Reichert (11-6) in the 7:05 contest as Lancaster looks to tie a season-high with a seventh straight win. Lancaster will host the Long Island Ducks over the weekend with a three-game series starting Friday. Fireworks will follow the Friday and Saturday games. Tickets are available at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com or by calling 717-509-HITS.

NOTES: Ackerman has retired 18 of 21 batters he has faced since going to the bullpen...Scobie has thrown seven consecutive quality starts and 10 total on the season (nine in the second half)...Woods has hit safely in six straight and 25 of 29...Herr has 16 RBI in his last 15 games.
