
Ducks Explode For 10-2 Win

CENTRAL ISLIP , NY- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 10-2 in front of 6,325 fans at Citibank Park on Tuesday evening.
Somerset struck first with a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead when third baseman Jeff Nettles slugged a two out solo home run (11) over the left field wall.
Long Island tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Ray Navarrete hit a one out infield single to third and scored on an RBI double to left center by rightfielder Jose Herrera.
The Ducks sent twelve men to the plate and scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to break a 1-1 tie and take a commanding 9-1 lead. Shortstop Alex Prieto hit a lead off single up the middle and advanced to second on an infield single to third by second baseman Juan Francia. Navarrete followed with a two run double down the left field line to drive in Prieto and Francia and after a single to center by first baseman Freddie Thon, designated hitter George Lombard cleared the bases with a three run home run (8) to left. Centerfielder Estee Harris singled to center and moved to second when third baseman Matt Cavagnaro was hit by a pitch with one out. After a Patriots' throwing error moved Harris to third, Harris scored on an RBI ground out to first by catcher Rob Sandora and then Cavagnaro scampered home on another Patriots' throwing error on a ground ball to third off the bat of Prieto. Francia would then drive in Prieto with an RBI single to center.
Long Island added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 10-1 when Lombard hit a one out solo home run (9) to right for his second of the game.
The Patriots plated a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Ducks' lead to 10-2 when Nettles ripped a two out double off the centerfield wall and scored on an RBI double into the left field corner by catcher Travis Anderson.
Ducks' starter Randy Leek (9-9) picked up the win, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking two in eight innings of work. Patriot' starter Josh Miller (8-4) suffered the loss, allowing ten runs, seven earned, on 13 hits while walking none and striking out two in six innings pitched.
With the loss the Patriots dropped to 30-20 in the second half and 73-47 overall while the Ducks improved to 25-26 and 62-59 overall.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, September 7th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for 6:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game includes a Post-Game Fireworks show presented by Cablevision Advertising Sales.
