Stormers Suffer Sixth Straight Loss
June 5, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
It was not as pretty as last Saturday's dual gem in Camden, but the result was the same.
For the second time in less than a week, Nate Bump beat Eric Ackerman, this time by a 6-4 margin as the Camden Riversharks sent the Lancaster Barnstormers to their sixth straight loss, Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Originally scheduled to play a doubleheader at 5:00, the Barnstormers and Riversharks settled for a single nine-inning game that got underway slightly after 8:00 on a chilly, damp evening in Lancaster. And, for a while, it resembled last Saturday's 1-0 affair at Campbell's Field.
Vito Chiaravalloti gave Camden a 1-0 lead with a line drive home run leading off the second, his fourth long ball of the season.
After that, Ackerman (2-3) and Bump (6-2) kept their opponents scoreless until the fifth inning. Brian Burgamy doubled off the signs in left field with one out. He advanced on an infield out by Jason Jacobs and scored on a soft line drive single to left by Christopher Walker as Camden stretched the lead to 2-0.
Bump's streak of scoreless frames against Lancaster came to an end in the bottom of the sixth. Lloyd Turner singled off Burgamy's glove at third, and Bryan Sabatella beat out a bunt single. Both runners moved ahead on a grounder by Danny Bravo. Turner scored on a grounder to second by L.J. Biernbaum, and Sabatella came home on Aaron Herr's sharp single to center to tie the game.
Ackerman could not keep the game knotted. Burgamy rapped his second double of the game, a liner into the right field corner with one out in the seventh. He scored when Jacobs singled to left.
Chiaravalloti's RBI double to right center and a long two-run homer by Val Majewski in the eighth inning off reliever Jon Huber gave Camden enough to survive a pair of Barnstormers runs in the bottom of the ninth.
The series continues on Saturday evening with a doubleheader starting at 6:30 pm. The scheduled fireworks display will be held between games of the twin-bill. There is also a cap giveaway sponsored by Comcast.
