Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers needed a trip to York to find their hitting strokes.
Lancaster amassed 14 runs in the first five innings on Saturday night and cruised to a 14-4 victory over the York Revolution in the middle game of a three-game series. The win was Lancaster's third straight and kept the club within a game of first place in the Freedom Division.
Jason Perry went 3-for-3 with a double, homer and four RBI, and L.J. Biernbaum collected three singles and also drove in four runs in the onslaught.
Despite the lopsided score, there was a point in the game where it seemed that the Barnstormers could end up on the wrong end of such a laugher.
Perry homered to left center with two outs in the first inning, but York roared back. Tom Collaro doubled off the big wall in left field to drive in Keoni DeRenne with two outs in the inning. Ryan Goleski followed with a single up the middle, and York took a 2-1 lead.
Eric Ackerman (1-0) got into a tight spot in the second as well. He was greeted by singles from Jeff Eure and Luis Taveras, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. Ackerman retired Brandon Pinckney on a fly ball to right, and Eure held at third base. The Barnstormers' lefty then hit Kennard Jones with a 2-2 offering to load the bases. De Renne flied to shallow right, and again Eure stayed at third. Amadeo Zazueta then flagged a ground ball by Matt Esquivel and got a force at second as Ackerman escaped without a nick.
From there, Lancaster took complete control of the game.
Lloyd Turner singled to right with one out in the third off Daryl Harang (2-1) and moved up as Danny Bravo walked. Perry ended his homer streak at three straight at bats, instead scoring Turner with a single to center, tying the game. With an error by Jones, Bravo and Perry each moved ahead a base. Bravo scored on a grounder to third by Ryan Mulhern, and Perry came across on a single by Biernbaum for a 4-2 lead.
The barrage continued in the fourth. Zazueta singled home Aaron Herr, who had walked on four pitches. Josh Sharpless came on in relief and got a double play grounder out of Turner, but then walked three straight batters and threw a wild pitch that allowed Adam Shorsher to cross the plate. Biernbaum then crept a single through the hole on the right side, scoring two more as Lancaster built an 8-2 lead.
By no means were the Barnstormers done. The fifth inning began in a nearly identical manner to the fourth. Herr walked on four pitches, Shorsher reached on a base hit (this time a double), and Zazueta singled home a run. Perry doubled into the left field corner with the bases loaded to drive in two more for an 11-2 lead. Mulhern, Biernbaum and Herr also drove in runs with singles. Jason Kershner finally shut the door on the Barnstormers attack, keeping Lancaster to one hit in the final four innings. It was somewhat akin to the sun coming out after the severe storm blew through - a storm that produced 22 Lancaster runs in nine innings over two nights.
Lancaster took the opportunity to get its bullpen some work. Derek Barrows went two innings, utilizing a pair of double plays to stay out of deep trouble. Ross Peeples worked a scoreless eighth, and Eddie Camacho dealt a perfect ninth.
