Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., May. 2, 2009) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced the signing of righthanded pitcher Julio Manon. The 35-year-old has spent last season with Bowie (AA, Orioles) of the Eastern League, where he posted 32 saves and a 3.39 ERA in 56 games as the Bay Sox closer. He then joined the Ducks late in the year, saving one game and earning a 1-0 record with a 2.45 ERA in five appearances.
"Julio gives us a powerful arm and adds tremendous depth to our bullpen," says Ducks pitching coach Dave LaPoint. "He gave us some big innings at the end of last season, and we're looking forward to seeing him make an even greater contribution in 2009."
Manon is in the 14th season of a professional career that has included two stops at the Major League level. The Dominican Republic native made his big league debut with Montreal in 2003 after spending 10 years in the minors. He appeared in 23 games for the Expos, and later emerged back at the game's highest level with Baltimore in 2006. Manon returned to the Orioles organization in 2008, posting gaudy numbers at the back end of the bullpen. At Bowie last year, Manon allowed just 35 hits and struck out 80 batters in 63.2 innings of work, and the Eastern League hit just .162 against him. The career reliever owns 47 wins and 77 saves in 392 minor league contests.
