Stockton Ports News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports endured their second shutout loss of a six-game road trip and their 13th shutout loss of the season on Sunday night at The Diamond. Stockton mustered just four hits in a 3-0 loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm in the rubber game of a three-game series to finish their six-game road trip with a 1-5 record.

Stockton saw its best scoring chance of the night fall by the wayside in the top of the fifth. With the game still scoreless, the Ports loaded the bases with one out against Pedro Avila (6-6), who took over in the fifth after starter Adrian Morejon worked four scoreless innings coming off the disabled list. Avila would get Chase Calabuig to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 twin-killing to keep the game scoreless.

Lake Elsinore broke the ice in the bottom of the fifth facing Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (1-1). Friedrichs gave up a one-out single to Chris Baker who scored on an ensuing double by A.J. Kennedy that put the Storm in front 1-0.

Friedrichs worked into the seventh inning and gave up a one-out double to Allen Cordoba followed by an RBI single to Baker that made it 2-0. Friedrichs was lifted at that point for Trey Cochran-Gill, who gave up three straight singles upon entering the game. One of those singles was hit by Nate Easley to score a third run. Lake Elsinore had Kennedy thrown out at the plate on the third single hit by Eguy Rosario that kept it a 3-0 score.

Friedrichs would suffer the loss, going 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five. Cochran-Gill pitched an inning-and-two-thirds and allowed four hits while striking out one.

Avila, after escaping the bases-loaded jam with one out in the fifth, went on to pitch five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while striking out three in earning the victory.

Following a day off on Monday, the Ports return to Banner Island Ballpark on Tuesday to open a three-game series with the Modesto Nuts. Xavier Altamirano (3-2, 6.81 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto left-hander Nick Wells (3-2, 6.32 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
