USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Storm Series at an End

March 19, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks and Tri-City Storm completed their six-game regular season series on Saturday with Tri-City winning the finale at Young Arena 4-2.

The Storm had 31 power plays while winning four of the first five games; Saturday they took full advantage of the two they were awarded.

Each team scored on an early advantage before the game was four minutes old. Tri-City cashed in at 2:20 when Graham Gamache found the rebound of Cole O'Hara's shot. Then Waterloo went to a power play on their next shift and the Hawks struck at 3:12. Ray Fust stuffed in a feed from John Waldron.

Tri-City's second special teams chance gave the Storm a new lead at 10:13. Mitchell Miller hit the net from the right circle for the go-ahead score.

That advantage had resulted from a kneeing call on Tyler Procious. After the whistle and as Procious was skating away, Lleyton Roed, Andrew Strathman, and Gavin Brindley chased Procious more than 30 feet and tackled him from behind. Brindley and Procious were given offsetting roughing penalties for the stoppage incident. Strathman - just returning from suspension - went and sat in the penalty box, until he was directed to return to his bench with no call against him. Roed - the first player to get to Procious - got off scot-free.

The first even-strength goal of the game came at 8:48 of the second. Connor Brown fought through a check to feed Gavin O'Connell outside the crease. With goalie Sebastian Wraneschitz unable to poke the puck away, O'Connell flipped his shot in.

However the Storm retook the lead for good at 11:14. A transition opportunity didn't come to fruition for Ilya Nikolaev, but Mason Wheeler found the puck left free near the left circle hashmark and pushed it past Emmett Croteau, who was down in the crease.

The 3-2 score held until Gamche knocked a puck into an open net at 18:16 of the third.

Next up for the Hawks is a Friday road game against the Sioux City Musketeers. Waterloo returns to home ice on Sunday, March 27th at 3:05 p.m. against the Lincoln Stars. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
