Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Like the night before, the Dubuque Fighting Saints rallied from behind to tie the game on two separate occasions, but the Muskegon Lumberjacks feasted on a late power play in the third period to pull ahead for good. Owen Mehlenbacher's goal at 11:42 sealed the deal in a 4-3 win for the Jacks on Saturday night at Mercy Health Arena.

Jake Richard and Jacob Braccini took the puck to the net front and Mehlenbacher stashed the puck past a prone Paxton Geisel to put Muskegon ahead 4-3. The goal came 17 seconds after the start of Muskegon's final power play opportunity.

Dubuque pushed relentlessly late in the third period, and were granted a 6-on-4 opportunity with Geisel pulled for the extra attacker and a power play given with just ten seconds to go, but the tying goal was not in the cards as the Lumberjacks cleared the zone and held on for the victory.

Down 2-0 late in the second period, the Fighting Saints found sudden life. A goal from Stephen Halliday, his 30th of the season, got the Saints back within one. That goal tied him with Sean Farrell for the USHL Tier I regular season career scoring record. His snap shot from the right circle bested Aleksandr Kuleshov to cut the score to 2-1.

Just 56 seconds later, the Saints struck again. Nine seconds into a power play, Halliday and Jackson Hallum converted on a triangle passing play to Tristan Lemyre for his first goal of the night. Halliday's assist put him over the top and made him the USHL's Tier I scoring leader with point #197.

While Phillip Tresca put Muskegon ahead early in the third period, the Fighting Saints had a response to that as well. Kenny Connors flagged down a failed clearing attempt by Muskegon and filtered the puck to a cutting Lemyre who made no mistake and scored his second goal of the night to tie the score at three.

Muskegon was held at bay for the most part in the first period, but the offense came through, first, off of a turnover. A zone entry left behind led to a 2-on-1 break and Gavin McCarthy scored from the right wing side to get the Jacks off and running. Muskegon would strike again two minutes and 33 seconds later, as Joey Larson stashed in the rebound of a shot from Braccini to put the home team ahead 2-0 after one period of play.

Muskegon outshot the Saints 35-24 for the game. Geisel made 31 saves in the effort.

The Fighting Saints are back in action to take on the Madison Capitols on Friday night, and the Chicago Steel on Saturday night, as part of Saint4Life Weekend at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
