Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Lake Elsinore Storm took advantage of early scoring opportunities and held on to defeat the Inland Empire 66ers 8-5 before 5,256, the largest home crowd of the season, on Friday night.
The Sixers had a chance to tie things up in the bottom of the ninth with Eduardo Perez representing the tying run at the plate with one out. Perez struck out swinging before Storm closer Bryan Oland induced a fly out to right by Scott Van Slyke to pick up his twelfth save of the year.
Brad Chalk led off the game by igniting the Storm offense with a single off Chris Withrow. During Angel Mercado's at bat, Chalk stole second and was aided by two throwing errors by the Sixers, the first on Kenley Jansen's errant throw to second, and the second error on the throw to third by center fielder Trayvon Robinson that ended up in the stands, allowing Chalk to score the game's first run.
The Storm tacked on three more in the second, including two driven home on Luis Martinez's double to right, pushing the Storm lead to 4-0.
The Sixers came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles from Jansen and Robinson off Lake Elsinore starter Jeremy McBryde (4-1).
Logan Forsythe led off the third inning with a bang, drilling a home run to left, extending the Lake Elsinore lead to 5-2. Marcel Prado relieved Withrow and walked three batters (two with the bases loaded) as the Storm lengthened its lead to 7-2.
Justin Fuller picked up a lead-off homer to right in the fourth, his first on the season.
The bottom four hitters for Inland Empire (Fuller, Elian Herrera, Jansen, and Christian Lara) were a combined 7-for-14 on the night. Perez also was a key contributor, going 3-for-4.
Withrow (2-3) took the loss, allowing 7 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.
The 66ers continue their four game series against the division rival Lake Elsinore Storm Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Tim Sexton (1-2, 2.75) gets the nod for the Sixers, as the Storm call on Wynn Pelzer (4-1, 4.31). Saturday is Armed Forces Day at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, all military personnel (active or retired) will receive a free Upper Box ticket for the game with a valid military ID.
