
Storm Kill All 14 Power Plays, Win 7-2

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Tri-City Storm (11-9-5, 27 pts) amazed 14 penalty kills in route to a 7-2 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks (9-13-1, 19 pts). In addition to the perfect penalty kill, the Storm scored three short-handed goals and Jaden Schwartz had a five-point night.
The Storm's Brett Mohler opened the scoring in the first period on a short-handed goal at the 7:18 mark. Schwartz made an excellent pass to Mohler from the right-wing, who one-timed the puck into the Waterloo net.
Schwartz would score at the 10:40 mark in the first period on the power play to give the Storm a 2-0 lead. Maxwell Tardy and Nate Jensen were credited with the assists on Schwartz's eighth power-play goal of the season.
Matt Johnson scored 1-minute and 31-seconds following Schwartz's goal to give Tri-City a 3-0 lead. Anthony DeCenzo and Tyler Amburgey picked up the assists on Johnson's fourth goal of the season.
Waterloo would get on the scoreboard 15:53 into the first period, as Zach Palmquist scored short-handed for the Black Hawks.
The second period was a display of the Waterloo power play, but it was also a showcase of Carsen Chubak. Waterloo generated 20 shots in the middle period; however Chubak made all 20 saves.
The Black Hawks had eight power plays chances in the second period, which none were successful.
Schwartz scored his second goal of the night on an unassisted short-handed tally at the 14:14 mark in the second period. The Storm centre stole the puck in the neutral-zone and attacked the Waterloo net with a back-hand shot that beat Black Hawk goalie C.J. Motte glove-side.
At the 1:49 mark of the third period, Tardy scored his seventh power-play goal of the season on a deflection on Mohler's shot from the top-left circle. Schwartz also assisted on Tardy's ninth goal of the season.
DeCenzo scored his ninth goal of the season 6:43 into the final period, as Schwartz earned his third assist and fifth point of the game. Amburgey also earned his second assist in the game on the goal that gave the Storm a 6-1 lead.
Tri-City finished the scoring similar to how it started, with a short-handed goal from Cody Murphy at the 13:23 mark in the third period. The goal was setup by Kenny Brooks, who made a slick pass over the Black Hawk defenseman on Murphy's one-timer. Chris Joyaux was given the second assist on the goal for his first point with the Storm in his debut game.
Brock Montpetit scored the final goal for Waterloo 15-seconds after Murphy's goal.
Chubak (8-6-5) made 35 saves on 37 shots in the win for the Storm. Motte (7-9-0) made 17 saves on 22 shots in the loss for Waterloo, as C.J. Groh made 7 saves on 9 shots in relief of Motte in the third period.
The Storm on the power play was 2-7, while Waterloo was second in the USHL on the power play before Friday night's game, but drop to seventh after going 0-14 with the man-advantage.
The Storm will play at home Saturday night against the Green Bay Gamblers before the USHL's Winter Break.
