ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Jacob Fallon (Southlake, Texas/1-2--3) and Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa./0-3--3) each recorded three points, while Adam Clendening (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored twice as the U.S. National Under-18 Team downed the Youngstown Phantoms, 9-3, here tonight. With the win, Team USA completed a weekend sweep of United States Hockey League opponents, outscoring its foes 17-4 between the two games.
Team USA struck just 1:23 into the game with a power-play goal off the stick of Jacob Fallon (Southlake, Texas). The goal came after Saad collected Michael Mersch's (Park Ridge, Ill.) rebound on the left side and dished the puck to Fallon who slid it past netminder Jordan Tibbett from the right faceoff dot. Stephen Johns (Wampum, Pa.) doubled the U.S. advantage after his snap shot from the right point zipped through a screen and over Tibbett's left shoulder at 11:32. Just 23 seconds later, Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) slid a cross-crease feed to Bill Arnold (Needham, Mass.) who tapped it home from the left side to make it 3-0. Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) found a wide-open Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) who snuck a shot under Tibbett and inside the right post with 5:59 to play in the opening stanza to cap the four-goal first period for Team USA. Tibbett was pulled in favor of Matt Mahalak after Shore's tally. U.S. netminder John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stopped all 10 shots he faced in the period.
In the second period, Czarnik made it 5-0 at 17:30 after his shot banked off a Youngstown defender and into the open goal. The Phantoms got on the board after Jefferson Dahl knocked home a rebound for a power-play goal at 5:49. Clendening gave Team USA a 6-1 cushion after he snapped Fallon's feed past Mahalak from the left faceoff circle at 13:10. Gibson made 18 stops in the second.
Tom Serratore scored at 8:11 of the third period to make it 6-2. Just 24 seconds later, Jarred Tinordi (Millersville, Md.) broke in alone on Mahalak and slipped a wrister under the netminder's left arm. Brett Gensler tallied at 11:32 to make it 7-3 after he slid a shot under Gibson. Derek Forbort (Duluth, Minn.) scored a power-play goal at 13:36 and Clendening added another power-play marker at 14:50 to account for the 9-3 final.
Gibson made 37 saves on the night to earn his second USHL victory.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team is off until Dec. 31 when it travels to Fargo, N.D., to take on the Force at the Urban Plains Center at 6:05 p.m. CST.
