Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Buccaneers faced off against the Waterloo Black Hawks on Saturday night in their final home game of 2009. Wearing special jerseys that were auctioned off for The Heart Connection Children's Cancer Program, the Buccaneers won the game 6-5 in what would prove to be an exciting game.

Waterloo's Bryce Randalen scored first for the Waterloo Black Hawks before the Buccaneers exploded in the first period. Just over halfway into the period, Ryan Walters set Chris Stafne up with a pass that tied the game up 1-1. Just two minutes later H.T. Lenz scored a powerplay goal that put the Buccaneers up 2-1 and gave the team the momentum it needed. Mitch Cain scored a goal just over a minute later at 13:52 followed by a powerplay goal from Austin Coldwell less than a minute at 14:50. The energy turned up a knotch in the stands at Buccaneer Arena when what looked like a fifth goal was scored by the Stfane but waved off by officials. After time ran out in the period, things stalled as both Des Moines head coach Mike Guentzel and head coach P.K. O'Handley were approached by officials - after a review the Buccaneers were awarded that fifth goal. The goal, scored at 18:45, put the Buccaneers up 5-1 heading into the first intermission.

The teams hit the ice to play the 1:15 following the fifth goal before the official start of the second period. Neither team scored in the extra time. Waterloo ‘s J.T. Brown was given a penalty shot three minutes into the period and was able to put the puck past Buccaneer goalie Eric Mihalik, bringing the score to 5-2. Black Hawk Soren Jonzzon closed the gap a little more with a goal at 7:35 in the period. The Buccaneers were unable to score in the second period - and were only able to get 9 shots on goal.

Waterloo tied the game 5-5 just five minutes into the third period, with a goal from Dan Sova at 3:03 and a goal from Nick Ebert at 4:12. With tensions running high things began to get rough out on the ice. Veteran Austin Handley, in his first game back at Buccaneer Arena, and Waterloo's Jimmy Siers dropped their gloves at 7:08 in the period. Five minutes later goalie Eric Mihalik left the game with an injury, putting Charles Williams in the net for the Buccaneers followed by an injured Dan O'Donoghue later on in the period. The rest of the period progressed without much action until Colton Sacuerman came up big for the Bucs with a goal at the 18:09 mark. That goal marked Saucerman's first goal of his USHL career, along with his first point. Waterloo would pull their goal and add a sixth player to the ice in a last minute effort to tie the game back up. The game would end with a 6 on 4 powerplay in favor of Waterloo but the Buccaneers held their own and won the game 6-5.

The three stars of the game were H.T. Lenz, Chris Stafne and Colton Saucerman.
