Storm Goaltender Jake Kielly Wins Goaltender of the Week
February 15, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - Tri-City Storm goaltender Jake Kielly has been named CCM Goaltender of the week, the USHL announced Monday.
Kielly, 19, allowed two goals in two weekend starts against the Sioux Falls Stampede, helping Tri-City sweep the weekend and remain second place in the Western Conference. The Clarkson commit made 60 of 62 saves, raising his save percentage to .928, the second-best mark in the league. Kielly's goals against average is 2.25, third in the USHL.
"Jake has a professional approach and brings it every day in practice," said Bill Muckalt, Storm Head Coach and General Manager. "We are happy with his growth over the course of the season."
Kielly helped Tri-City stay within reach in each game against Sioux Falls. Friday, the first-year USHL goalie made the last 25 saves flipped on cage after allowing a goal on the Herd's second shot. Saturday, Kielly allowed the opening goal on the third shot, but shut the door with 32 straight saves to finish with 34 stops in Tri-City's 2-1 overtime win.
The dual citizen of the United States and Canada has been nearly unbeatable since the calendar turned to 2016, helping Tri-City earn points in each of his ten starts. Kielly has a 9-0-1-0 record in the new year, the second most wins by a goalie in 2016, plus a 1.86 goals against average and a .942 save percentage. Kielly's new-year goals against average ranks second in the league, while his save percentage is tops in the circuit.
"I think the biggest thing for me is my mental approach," said Kielly when asked how he has improved this season. "My mental coach [Shaun Goodsell] and I work a lot on making sure that I never get too high or too low. Being able to come in to every weekend with the same approach has helped me remain consistent in net."
The native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota stands 6-foot-3, 193 lbs. and catches with his left hand. The tandem of Kielly and Dayton Rasmussen, also an Eden Prairie native, has limited Storm opponents to 2.64 goals against per game, the fourth-stingiest mark in the league.
This is the second time Kielly has won Goaltender of the Week this season, and the seventh time Storm players have been named players of the week at their respective position in 2015-16.
Tri-City is home Friday, Feb. 19 against Sioux Falls for Thunderstruck Night, brought to you by Hy-vee, with a Free Kids Friday and a special thunderstick giveaway.
