Omaha Lancers News Release
Fargo, ND - Johan Steen and Jake Massie scored six seconds apart late in the second period to give the Omaha Lancers a third-period lead. However, it was the Fargo Force scoring late in the game to force overtime and Jere Astren notched the game-winning goal for a 4-3 victory at Scheels Arena on Monday night.
Omaha took the lead early in the first period from below the goal line. Matt Meier dished the puck down to Brannon McManus to the left of the net below the end line. After receiving the pass, McManus threw the puck off the side of goaltender Robbie Beydoun's skate and into the net for the 1-0 lead. The goal was McManus' 13th of the season and the assists went to Matt Meier and JC MacLean just 2:26 into the game.
In the second period on the power play, Fargo tied the game. Hank Crone took the puck at the top of the left wing circle and played it to the left of the net for Blake Lizotte. On the one-timer, Lizotte beat goaltender Kris Oldham to even the score 1-1 at 11:03 of the middle frame. Crone and Denis Smirnov picked up the assists on the power-play goal.
Later in the second period, Crone struck to give Fargo their first lead of the night. This time, Crone was on the receiving end of a back-door pass and beat a diving Kris Oldham over his glove side to give the Force a 2-1 lead. The goal was Crone's 11th goal of the season with the assists going to Evan Bell on the pass to Crone, and Jere Astren at 14:13 of the second period.
With under two minutes remaining in the same period, Omaha came right back with a pair of goals just six seconds apart. Nick Rivera moved down the left wing side into the offensive zone and was joined by Johan Steen on the rush pinching in. At the bottom of the circle, Rivera put the puck right on the tape of Steen who sent it by the left leg pad of Robbie Beydoun to tie the game with 1:26 left in the second period. River and Austin Alger had the assists.
Right off the next center ice face-off Josh French pulled the puck drop back to Jake Massie. After receiving the puck, Massie moved quickly to the offensive zone, cut to the middle, and let a low wrist shot go that beat Beydoun on his left side for his second goal of the season. Massie's go-ahead goal came just six seconds after Johan Steen tied the game with the only assist going to Josh French for winning the face-off. Ryan Wischow then replaced Robbie Beydoun in net.
Late in the third period, Hank Crone tied the game on a partial breakaway in the left wing circle. Niko Hildenbrand sent a long pass to Crone who snuck in behind the defense. At the hash marks, Crone sent a wrist shot by Kris Oldham for his second goal of the night to tie the game, 3-3, with just 2:54 left in the game.
After several big saves by Ryan Wischow in overtime for Fargo, Jere Astren took the puck in the left wing circle and rocketed a slap shot over the left shoulder of Oldham to end the game in overtime, 4-3.
On the night, Oldham stopped 28 of 32 shots in the loss.
