Storm Errors Lift Mavericks in 11
September 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
After failing to score the winning run late in the game numerous times, the Lake Elsinore Storm committed two crucial errors in the 11th inning, helping the Mavericks to a 3-1 win Sunday night.
The game began as a pitchers duel between Maikel Cleto and Anthony Bass. Neither gave up a hit through three innings, and each faced the minimum through three frames as well.
With two out in the fourth, Johermyn Chavez sent a fly ball to right field that Bo Davis misplayed for an error to put Chavez at second base. Rich Poythress, fresh off the disabled list, followed with an RBI single to give the Mavs the lead.
The Storm threatened once in the fifth with a one-out double by Allan Dykstra, but he was stranded at third to end the inning.
Lake Elsinore had the tying run at third with two down in the seventh when the Mavs took Cleto out of the game and brought LaFromboise. Dykstra sent a deep drive to center field, but Denny Almonte made the catch at the wall to end the inning.
The Mavs wouldn't be as lucky in the eighth. With one out, Ali Solis hit a homer out to left field to tie the game. The Storm loaded the bases with two outs, but Cody Decker popped out to end the inning.
The Storm had the winning run at second with one out in the eighth, but LaFromboise retired the next two batters to send the game to extras.
Lake Elsinore's best chance to win occurred in the tenth. Each of the first two men singled and they loaded the bases with one out.
Vince Belnome sent a weak ground ball to first, and the Mavs got the force out at home. LaFromboise (10-5) forced Rymer Liriano to pop out to end the threat.
Chavez led off the 11th with a double. Luis Nunez laid down a bunt, but Storm pitcher Hayden Beard threw the ball wide of third base to allow Chavez to score.
With Nunez at third and one down, Kuo Hui Lo sent a sharp ground ball back to the mound. Beard (0-1) fielded the ball, but threw the ball behind the third baseman, allowing another run to score.
After failing to capitalize on their earlier chances, the Storm ran out of steam in the bottom of the 11th. Stephen Penney retired the side in order to earn his sixth save.
The down side of the win was that Cleto did not figure in the decision. He turned in one of his best start of the year, going 6.2 scoreless frames. Cleto only allowed three hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
Like the Mavericks, Rancho Cucamonga also survived in extra innings. With the final regular season game on Monday, the Mavs will need to win and hope for a Quakes loss to claim a second half title. The Mavs will face the Storm at 2:05 p.m. with live coverage starting at 1:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
