Giants Conclude Regular Season with 9-5 Win

September 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

James Simmons drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to plate the go-ahead run before Jose Flores delivered a three- RBI triple as the San Jose Giants earned a 9-5 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Monday afternoon at Municipal Stadium in the regular season finale. The victory knocked the Rawhide out of wild card contention while San Jose finished the year with an overall record of 76-64 - tops in the North Division.

Flores (2-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI) and Drew Biery (2-for-3, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI), who hit a key double earlier in the eighth inning, led the Giants offensive attack. Francisco Peguero finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 20 games - the fourth-longest in San Jose Giants history.

With the score tied 5-5, Brandon Crawford began the bottom of the eighth by drawing a four-pitch walk. Biery then stepped to the plate and hammered a double into the left field corner advancing Crawford to third. After Wendell Fairley flied out to shallow left and Joel Weeks was intentionally walked to load the bases, new pitcher Kevin Munson issued a five-pitch walk to Simmons forcing home the go-ahead run. Munson recovered to induce the next hitter, Juan Perez, to bounce into a fielder's choice with the second out coming at home, but then Flores crushed a 1-0 pitch off the fence in deep right center field to score all three runners. Flores easily made it into third with a triple as the Giants extended their lead to 9-5.

Brian Anderson (3-1) was credited with the victory despite surrendering the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Anderson allowed a two-out, RBI single to Paul Goldschmidt in the seventh as Visalia drew even before tossing a 1-2-3 top of the eighth. Edwin Quirarte entered the game to begin the ninth and promptly allowed a leadoff single to Gerson Montilla before plunking Niko Gallego to put runners on first and second. However, Quirarte quickly retired the next three hitters, including the league MVP Goldschmidt on a ground out to second for the final out of the game.

The Giants initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on Fairley's two-out, RBI single into left. Visalia moved in front by a 2-1 margin in the fourth with consecutive two-out, RBI singles from Kyle Greene and Matt Davidson. San Jose though immediately answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Fairley on first base and two outs, Joel Weeks hammered an RBI double to deep left center field. Peguero followed with a single to plate Weeks for a 3-2 Giants advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Biery delivered a two-out, two-run triple off the fence in straightaway center to make it 5-2.

Jorge Bucardo started on the mound for San Jose and worked the first four innings with two runs (both earned) and four hits allowed. He struck out four and walked none. Bucardo had retired 10 consecutive Rawhide hitters until plunking Goldschmidt with two outs in the top of the fourth.

Visalia battled back with a pair of runs against Scott Nestor in the sixth before drawing even in the seventh while facing Anderson.
