Mavericks Enter Playoffs on a Roll

September 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Needing a win to put all the pressure on Rancho Cucamonga to win in Lancaster to win the second half crown, the Mavs took care of business in Lake Elsinore, emerging with a 10-5 victory Monday afternoon.

The Mavs were slow to get it going, and looked like they might be in trouble early on. Two batters into the bottom of the first, the Storm took a 1-0 lead. After Daniel Robertson walked, Cole Figureoa doubled. An error by Daniel Carroll on the play allowed Robertson to score.

It stayed 1-0 until the fourth. Rich Poythress unloaded a two-run homer, putting the Mavs in the lead for good.

Carroll also went deep the next inning - -a line drive down the left field line and his first with the Mavs to make it 3-1.

In the sixth, Poythress reached on an error by Vince Belnome with one out. Jake Shaffer followed with a double, and Shaver Hansen brought Poythress home with a sac fly.

The Storm scored once in the bottom of the inning on a play that could have turned into a huge disaster. With the bases loaded and one out, Rymer Liriano sent a ground ball to third base. Luis Nunez dropped Kyle Seager's throw at second, allowing everyone to be safe and cutting the lead to 4-2.

With the bases still loaded with one out, Jose Jimenez got Chris Tremblay to bounce into a double play to end the threat.

After the Mavs had none on with two out in the seventh, five straight men reach base to score three more runs. Poythress provided a two-run single, and Shaffer followed with an RBI double.

The Storm had the bases loaded with none out in the seventh, but Blake Nation limited them to one run to make it 7-3.

Robertson provided an RBI triple in the eighth to get the Storm back within 7-4.

The Mavs put the game out of reach in the ninth, tacking on three runs. Shaffer knocked a two-run double, and Trevor Coleman also collected an RBI single.

Cody Decker hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, but the Storm didn't threaten a true comeback as the Mavs won three straight for the first time in well over a month.

The Mavs relied on the bullpen to get through the game in order to rest some arms for the playoffs. Ogui Diaz (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one run in 3.1 solid innings.

Storm starting pitcher Juan Oramas (7-3) took the loss in his final tune-up before the playoffs. He allowed three runs and four hits over five innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Although the Mavs took care of business, so did Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes defeated Lancaster Monday evening 11-4 to finish one game ahead of the Mavericks and take the South Division second half title.

Since the Quakes won Monday, the Mavs and Quakes will open their three-game playoff series Wednesday night in the High Desert at 7:05 p.m. Games two and three (if necessary) will follow Thursday and Friday in Rancho Cucamonga.
