Guelph Storm News Release

After dropping a 6-2 decision on home ice against the Plymouth Whalers on January 3, the Storm had an opportunity to return the favor in Michigan three days later. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Storm surrendered two unanswered goals in regulation before Connor Carrick notched his seventh of the season in overtime to give the Whalers a 3-2 win.

Like the team in front of him, Keegan Wilson rebounded from a disappointing performance on Wednesday night in Michigan as he turned aside 26 of 29 shots in the overtime loss.

Justin Auger netted his 13th of the season and Patrick Watling staked the Storm to a 2-0 advantage at 15:28 of the first.

In a game that was decided by a single goal in extra time, the three stars had a home team bias with the Whalers taking all three honors.

On January 6, the Storm took on the Spirit in Michigan and looked to be in good shape with seven minutes remaining in the third period and had the three points within their grasp until the Spirit scored the equalizer and finally won the game with Garret Ross netting the game winner for Saginaw. The scoring was opened up in the first period with a goal by Zach Mitchell on a power play assisted by Brock McGinn and Zac Leslie. After the Spirit tied up the game, Cody McNaughton restored the one goal advantage from Brock Beukeboom with 3:31 remaining in the first.

The game remained at 2-1 for the next 37 minutes with the Jason Shaw scoring his first of the season with a man advantage at the 13:29 market in the final period of play. The Storm looked like they would be going into overtime for the second game in a row until a defensive zone miscue left Garret Ross all alone for the deciding goal.

On Tuesday January 8, the Storm took on their local rivals the Kitchener Rangers. The lone goal scored by Justin Bailey for Kitchener in the first put the Storm down a goal at the end of the first. A second goal scored by Brent Pederson put the Storm down 2-0 heading into the final ten minutes of game play in the second period. Jason Dickinson would cut that lead in half after capitalizing on a rebound from Matt Finn with 8:29 remaining in the second period. It looked like the Storm would tie the game after Tanner Richard scored a goal in the last minutes of the second period but after a lengthy review it was determined that the goal would not count because of where the puck hit on the shaft of his stick and the Ranger would keep their one goal lead heading into the third period.

The final period of play was dominated by Kitchener with the Rangers netting four goals, three of which were unanswered by the Storm. Rangers goals were scored by Matia Marcantuoni, Ben Fanelli, Joshua Leivo and Eric Ming, the lone third period goal for the Storm was scored by Dickinson netting his second of the night and 14th of the season.

Patrick Watling is the Hy-Grade Steel Roofing Player of the Week!

Jan 08, 2013

The Guelph Storm announced today that forward Patrick Watling is the Hy-Grade Steel Roofing Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 6th.

Watling collected three points in four games last week putting forth his best effort in the Storm's 2-1 victory over the Oshawa Generals. He picked up a point on both Storm goals as he set up Justin Auger for the first goal of the game and then buried the winner with less then 30 seconds remaining. Watling was pointless against Saginaw and the first match up against Plymouth on Wednesday, but made his way back on the scoresheet on Saturday when he scored the second Storm goal of the game in the 3-2 overtime loss to the Whalers.

In 24 games this season, the Sault Ste. Marie native has recorded 11 points, five goals and six assists.
