Brampton Steelheads News Release

After outstanding efforts between the pipes by Dawson Carty on Saturday night, and Cameron Zanussi on Sunday, James Boyd was looking for a similar effort from Spencer Martin on Monday afternoon; the veteran did not disappoint.

The reigning OHL Champions opened the scoring early in the first period, burning the Steelheads with a power play marker. It was Pius Suter who took advantage of the extra man to give Guelph a 1-0 lead, however the Steelheads were quick to respond. Stephen Gibson found Austin Gerhart alone in front of the net, and Gerhart made no mistake in tucking the puck into the open cage to knot the game at 1.

Guelph found themselves with a great opportunity to score a go-ahead goal, but Stefan LeBlanc turned on the jets, making a great play to break up the potential breakaway. The Steelheads would find themselves with an opportunity of their own, and made no mistake. A full team effort saw Jordan Addesi drive to the net, before Greg DiTomaso and Lucas Venuto picked up assists on Bryson Cianfrone's go-ahead goal.

While there were no other goals in the period, there was lots of fast-paced action as the Steelheads "young guns" set the tone. Mike McLeod, Jason Smith, Nathan Bastian and Jesse Barwell looked to be in mid-season form, a perfect complement to experienced forwards Cianfrone, Venuto and Josh Burnside.

Early in the second period, Justin Auger would tie the game for Guelph on the power play; however the Steelheads would respond once again with a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal where Venuto and Cianfrone fed Burnside to make it 3-2. Jason Dickinson would make it 3-3 on a rebound but Guelph's composure would slip away soon after.

Mississauga would kick off the third period with a power play opportunity; however Guelph would take advantage of a special teams opportunity of their own to make it 4-3. The Steelheads would once again bounce right back as Venuto would again knot the game, this time sending it to a shootout.

Determined to bounce back from a shootout loss on Sunday, the Steelheads found themselves down 1-0 after the first round, but Bastian would capitalize in the second round, tying the shootout heading into the "supposed" final shooters. The goalies would take over, turning away all shooters until the eleventh round. Jason Smith would finally break through with the game winner to give the Steelheads a 5-4 victory in Guelph. Spencer Martin made 37 saves in the win.

The Trout will return home to kick off their home exhibition schedule on Friday, September 5 at 7:00 PM as the Guelph Storm visit the Milton Sports Centre. The Trout will then welcome the Kitchener Rangers to Vic Johnston Arena in Streetsville on Sunday, September 7 at 2:00 PM, before wrapping up the preseason at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville against Erie on Sunday, September 14 at 3:00 PM. Tickets to all preseason contests will be available on location for $5.00.
