Belleville Bulls News Release
PETERBOROUGH, ON - Following a very competitive training camp your Belleville Bulls opened up the 2014-15 preseason with a game against East Division rival, the Peterborough Petes on Monday afternoon.
Peterborough controlled much of the play in the first period after an early Jake Bricknell penalty, but rookie goaltender Connor Hicks kept the door closed on a number of chances. Shortly after it was Peterborough's time in the penalty box as the Bulls had a few chances of their own. "It was a penalty filled game so there was a lot of special teams on both sides" said Assistant Coach Jake Grimes following the contest.
In the dying seconds of the period, the Bulls were the first on the board as Whitby Wildcats defenceman Jack Hanley hammered one home from Adam Laishram and Justin Lemcke. The Bulls headed into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
The chippy play continued in the second as both teams took turns on the power play but neither could capitalize. Another late goal saw Adam Timleck scoring for Peterborough to tie the game up at 1 heading into the third. The Bulls lead 23-19 in shots after two periods.
In the final frame the goals came in bunches as both teams were looking to open their preseason on a high note. The Bulls capitalized on another Peterborough penalty as Remi Elie scored on the power play to give his club a 3-1 lead. Brett Gustavsen and Cole Candella had the helpers. Not long after Chad Heffernan put the Bulls up 3-1 with assists from Michael Cramarossa and Alex Yuill.
Peterborough had some answers, though, as Hunter Garlent scored at 8:03 to cut into the lead. With just 23 seconds remaining in regulation rookie Matt Timms scored to send the first preseason game of the year to a shootout.
In the first two rounds Brandon Saigeon and Michael Cramarossa were denied for the Bulls, as were Peterborough's first two shooters. Steve Lorentz was up next for the Petes and beat Connor Hicks to put the pressure on Aaron Berisha. However, Dylan Wells stood his ground to seal the 4-3 win for Peterborough. "Connor was real good. Strong, very calm, very patient, very comfortable and I thought he had a real good outing." - Assistant Coach Jake Grimes on net minder Connor Hicks.
