Tri-City Storm News Release

KEARNEY - Nebraska's Tri-City Storm hockey team is on the home stretch of more than just a hockey season. Each year Storm hockey raises funds for various community organizations as part of the team's outreach efforts. This month, the team will wrap up its season of giving back with the annual "Skaters as Waiters" event. The festivities will take place at Skeeter Barnes restaurant in Kearney on Thursday, March 12th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

Skaters as Waiters is an event where Storm hockey players seat guests and wait tables for one night at Skeeter Barnes restaurant. All tips earned by the "waiters" are donated to a different charity each year. This year, Skeeter Barnes management and Storm hockey administrators have selected the Kearney Area Community Foundation as the beneficiary. This organization is known for enhancing the quality of life in the Kearney area by promoting the spirit of charitable giving and effectively responding to the community's needs. In addition to waiting tables, the Storm players will be available for autographs and pictures with guests.

During the 2008-09 hockey season, the Storm has created several events to help give back to the community. Last October, Storm hockey organized the first annual "Stormy's 5K Fun Run" benefiting the MS Society. November showcased the "Take School by Storm Rally" encouraging more than 1,200 students to try their best in the classroom. In December, the Storm donated over $2,200 back to the Boy Scouts of America as a part of "Scouting with the Storm." The United Way Jersey auction just concluded on February 21st and is credited with earning over $17,000 for the Kearney Area United Way.

"Even in times of economic uncertainty, it's been wonderful to see how Storm fans and the community as a whole have stepped up again this year in support of so many great causes," stated V.P. of Sales & Marketing Kyle Means. "With the upcoming Skaters as Waiters event, we could reach close to twenty-five thousand dollars in total fundraising this season. That's a remarkable accomplishment by the people of this community."
