PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Stone Crabs scored seven runs in the first two innings to defeat the Daytona Tortugas 9-6 at Charlotte Sports Park Monday.
The Stone Crabs (71-58, 37-25) didn't waste any time tallying runs against Daytona (65-64, 28-35) starter Andrew Jordan (1-7). After a leadoff walk and an error, Carl Chester drove in the first run with a single to left. After a wild pitch, Jake Fraley drove home another run with a groundout to make it 2-0. The next batter was Rene Pinto , who roped a single into right to extend the lead to 3-0. With the bases loaded, Jordan walked Tristan Gray , forcing home a run to cap the inning at 4-0.
Still up by that count in the second, Josh Lowe was hit by a pitch before Chester doubled him to third. Fraley followed with a two-run triple to the gap in right to make it 6-0 Stone Crabs. Two batters later, Gray plated Fraley on a sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-0.
However, the Tortugas came storming back to score two runs on three hits in the third to make it 7-2.
After the Stone Crabs added a run in the fifth on a Jermaine Palacios single, Daytona scored twice in the sixth on a wild pitch and groundout to make it 8-4.
Crabs starter Kenny Rosenberg (10-2) went six innings to earn his team-leading tenth win. He struck out four while allowing four runs on five hits.
Still up 8-4, Fraley singled to start the Charlotte sixth before two walks loaded the bases. Kevin Padlo followed by driving in a run with a fly ball to center to make it 9-4.
In the top of the eighth, Ibandel Isabel clobbered a two-run home run to left to make it 9-6. After two singles brought the tying run to the plate, Orlando Romero struck out the final two batters of the inning to keep the margin at three.
Ivan Pelaez worked a perfect ninth inning to notch his seventh save.
Now up by two games in the division with seven to play, the Stone Crabs will host Daytona at 6:35 p.m. again on Tuesday. Brian Shaffer (2-1, 3.04) makes the start for Charlotte against Tommy Bergjans (4-2, 3.69) of the Tortugas. Coverage starts at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
