Middleton, WI - Christian Stoever made a name for himself in Madison on Friday night, turning back 37 saves during a 3-2 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
Reid Pabich kicked off the scoring when he shoveled a shot top shelf past Dominic Basse for the 1-0 lead with 7:55 remaining in the first period for his 8th goal of the year. Carson Bantle picked up an assist for his team-leading 25th point of the season.
Youngstown retaliated with a goal from Artyom Borshyov with 2:30 remaining when he beat Christian Stoever to tie the game.
The Phantoms would take the lead on a power play goal early in the 2nd period. Following a stop by Stoever, Jan Kern was on the on the doorstep to put home an easy rebound. Fortunately for Madison, it took less than a minute and a half to even the score with a very similar play that allowed Ricky Lyle to knot the game at two with his 3rd goal of the season.
Verners Egle put the Capitols over the top in the 3rd as he won a foot race with a Phantoms defender and beat him to the net. Egle put on the moves to make Basse look foolish, and beat him with a backhander about halfway through the period.
Christian Stoever shut the door on the Phantoms, stonewalling them with 37 saves en route to his first victory as a Madison Capitol.
Madison returns to action on Saturday, December 14th when they take on the Youngstown Phantoms for the final home game of 2019. It's also the 6th annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Stoughton Hospital. Bring out as many teddy bears or stuffed animals as you can carry, and chuck them on the ice following the Capitols first goal of the night. All teddy bears will be donated to RISE Wisconsin and St. Vincent De Paul.
