Stockton wins 7-4
August 7, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
After holding the opposition without a home run the last four games, the Mavs had trouble keeping the Stockton Ports inside the park, as Stockton hit three homers in a 7-4 win Friday night.
The Mavs got on the board first, scoring once in the second. Rich Poythress blooped a double into left field, stole third base, and then scored on a Kuo Hui Lo ground out.
The Ports hit their first homer in the bottom of the inning, as Jeremy Barfield teed off on a three-run shot to put the Ports in the lead for good. It was Barfield's first homer since June 29, and his third in five games against the Mavs this season.
Grant Green added an RBI single in the third to put Stockton up 4-1.
The Mavs cut the lead down to two with an RBI double by Jake Shaffer in the fourth. They loaded the bases with two outs, but Edilio Colina flied out to end the inning.
Stockton extended its lead out to four in the bottom of the inning when Jermaine Mitchell hit a two-run homer.
The Mavs pulled within 6-3 in the sixth on a sac fly by Poythress. Even though they had runners and second and third with none out, that was the only run they could muster.
Yusuf Carter hit the final--and longest--home run of the night in the eighth to give Stockton a 7-3 lead.
The Mavs fought hard in the ninth. After the first two men were retired, Ralph Henriquez connected on his first homer to pull the Mavs within three.
Denny Almonte drew a walk, and Kyle Seager singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Stockton closer Paul Smyth regrouped and got Colina to fly out to end the game and earn his 18th save of the season.
Ports starting pitcher Justin Marks had a nice outing after a rough Cal League debut in his previous start. Marks (1-1) worked five-plus innings, allowing three runs--two earned--and four hits. He struck out and walked three each.
Mavericks starter Kenn Kasparek had a rare rough outing, allowing more than three runs in a road start for the first time this year. Kasparek (7-4) lasted just five innings, surrendering six runs. Although he only gave up four hits, two were homers, making it two straight starts allowing more than one home run. He struck out four and walked three.
After losing the opening game for the first time in their last five series, the Mavs look to bounce back Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when they face the Ports. Live coverage will start at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
