Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports (52-59) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the High Desert Mavericks (60-51) to open their series on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
The Ports totaled three home runs in the contest, and Jermaine Mitchell extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games by finishing 2x4 with a home run. Justin Marks won his first game for the Ports in his second start for Stockton. He allowed just three runs (two earned) on four hits in 5.0 innings. Paul Smyth collected his 18th save on the year, and Jose Pina tossed 2.2 scoreless innings.
Both teams were scoreless in the first inning. High Desert pulled ahead, 1-0, in the second inning. With one out, third baseman Rich Poythress doubled. He came home to score as designated hitter Kuo Hui Lo grounded out to shortstop Grant Green.
The Ports took a 3-1 lead in the second. First baseman Mike Spina singled to start things off. He advanced to second as catcher Yusuf Carter was hit by a pitch. Right fielder Jeremy Barfield slammed a three-run homer to left field to put the Ports ahead. It was his first home run since June 29. The Ports added another run in the third inning on an RBI single by Green to pull ahead to a 4-1 advantage. Green snapped an 0x12 hitless streak with the single.
An RBI double by left fielder Jake Shaffer scored Poythress, as the Mavericks made it 4-2, in the fifth inning.
But Mitchell gave the Ports more of a cushion as he notched his eighth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning.
High Desert put another run across as Poythress hit a sacrifice fly to center fielder David Thomas to score right fielder Johermyn Chavez, to make the score 6-3, in the top of the sixth inning.
The Ports scored their seventh and final run on a monster solo home run by Carter in the eighth. It was his eighth of the year.
Mavericks catcher Ralph Henriquez collected his first home run off Ports closer Smyth, dropping a homer over the center field wall to make it 7-4 in the ninth.
The Ports and the Mavericks will meet tomorrow at 7:05 PM PST for Game 2 of the series. RHP Brett Tomko (0-1, 7.83) will start for Stockton while RHP Andrew Carraway (8-5, 4.99) will take the hill for High Desert. The gates will open at 5:05 PM, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a Grant Desme bobblehead. Fans can follow the game live on KWSX 1280 AM.
